Introduction

Our client is seeking a highly experienced, hands-on Workshop Manager to oversee a busy steel processing operation and manage a workforce of 45 or more employees.

The successful candidate must come from a steel service centre background and have extensive practical experience managing steel-processing activities, production teams, machinery, quality standards and workshop output.

Applicants from unrelated manufacturing environments or general mechanical workshops will not be considered. Steel service centre experience is non-negotiable.

WHAT IS A STEEL SERVICE CENTRE?

A steel service centre receives steel in bulk—such as coils, sheets, plates, sections and other steel products—and processes the material according to customer specifications.

This includes operations such as

  • Cutting and shearing
  • Bending and forming
  • Plate rolling
  • Slitting and decoiling
  • Guillotining
  • Saw cutting
  • Plasma, laser or flame cutting
  • Drilling, punching and related steel-processing activities

Duties & Responsibilities

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage the day-to-day operations of the steel processing workshop
  • Lead, supervise and coordinate a workforce of 45 or more employees
  • Plan production schedules and allocate labour, machinery and resources
  • Oversee cutting, bending, rolling, shearing and other steel-processing operations
  • Ensure customer orders are completed accurately and within required deadlines
  • Monitor production output, efficiency, downtime and material wastage
  • Ensure finished products meet customer specifications and quality standards
  • Conduct regular inspections of machinery, equipment and work areas
  • Coordinate preventative maintenance and machinery repairs
  • Enforce health, safety, housekeeping and operational procedures
  • Manage staff attendance, performance, discipline and productivity
  • Investigate production delays, quality concerns and operational problems
  • Work closely with sales, estimating, purchasing, warehouse and dispatch departments
  • Maintain accurate production records and provide regular operational reports

REQUIREMENTS

  • Extensive experience working within a steel service centre
  • Proven experience managing and supervising 45 or more workshop, production and operational employees
  • Sound knowledge of steel plates, sheets, coils, structural sections and related steel products
  • Strong hands-on knowledge of steel cutting, bending, rolling and forming processes

  • Excellent planning, problem-solving and decision-making abilities
