Duties & Responsibilities

Core Operational Duties

Operate Hoist: Manages the winding engine to lower and raise cages or skips carrying personnel, rock, and materials.

Handle Signals: Transmits, receives, and reacts accurately to bell or electronic shaft signals from the banksman or onsetter.

Monitor Loads: Verifies weight loads to ensure they stay within safe lifting limits and prevent overloading.

Reset Systems: Clears minor trip-outs or resets automatic hoists safely when minor faults occur.

Safety and Legal Compliance

Daily Inspections: Tests and inspects the winder, brakes, and safety devices for legal compliance before shifts.

Log Books: Records daily machinery conditions, shift operations, stoppages, and maintenance reasons in the legal logbook.

Hazard Reporting: Identifies and reports mechanical or electrical faults, non-compliance, and safety risks immediately.

Regulations: Operates strictly under the Mine Health and Safety Act and regional mineral acts

Desired Experience & Qualification

Winding Engine Driver Certificate: A recognized Winding Engine Driver Certificate of Competency issued by the Department of Mineral Resources (DMR) or Department of Mineral Energy (DME).

Practical Experience: Generally 1 to 5 years of proven experience working as a qualified winding engine driver or shaft operations worker (including onsetter/banksman experience) in an underground mining environment.

Machine Proficiency: Familiarity with both Alternating Current (AC) and Direct Current (DC) winding machines
