The role: The Wet Services & Fire Engineer is the building-side hydraulics and fire-protection specialist on engagements. Design the water that flows through, around, and out of the buildings clients own - cold and hot water reticulation, wastewater drainage, fire-water reticulation including hydrants, sprinklers and fire pumps, rainwater and greywater systems, and the integration of all of these with the broader civil and process infrastructure on site. Work across multiple ECSA work stages on each engagement, with scope and accountability calibrated to your seniority. Must have: - Engineering qualification. BSc / BEng / B.Tech in Civil or Mechanical Engineering. - Professional registration pathway. ECSA Candidate Engineer (registered or pending) at junior level; clear path toward Pr Eng or Pr Tech Eng at mid-level; Pr Eng or Pr Tech Eng or imminent at mid-senior level. - Wet services or fire engineering exposure. Academic or work exposure to wet services and / or fire engineering design. Hands-on internship, vacation work or project experience counts. - SANS standards familiarity. Working familiarity with SANS 10252-1 (water reticulation), SANS 10252-2 (drainage), SANS 10400-W (fire water), SANS 10400-T (fire safety), SANS 10287 (sprinklers), and related codes. - Drafting. AutoCAD or Revit competence. - Detail discipline. - Driver's licence and own transport. Site work is part of the role. Junior (1–3 years post-qualification) - Support design of domestic water supply, hot water generation, drainage, fire-water reticulation, fire safety and signage under senior supervision. - Prepare engineering drawings, technical reports, specifications, and tender documentation. - Develop compliance with relevant SANS standards and municipal regulations. - Attend site inspections and progress meetings. - Earn ECSA Candidate Engineer registration if not already held; begin the Pr Eng / Pr Tech Eng pathway. Mid (4–7 years post-qualification) - Lead the wet services + fire engineering design on small-to-medium engagements end-to-end across ECSA Stages 1–6. - Own the basis of design / design intent reports, hot and cold-water reticulation (SANS 10252-1), internal wastewater and condensate drainage (SANS 10252-2, SANS 10400-P), fire-water reticulation (SANS 10400-W), water supply storage and booster pump station designs. - Perform the fire-compliance assessment within Company's water audits — fire reserves, reticulation and pump adequacy, reported within the audit standard under Pr.Eng review. - Specify packaged water and wastewater treatment plant requirements. - Coordinate with civil engineers, process engineers. - Move toward Pr Eng or Pr Tech Eng (ECSA) registration. Mid-Senior (8–12 years post-qualification) - Own the wet services + fire engineering on tier-1 engagements, including multi-storey commercial, healthcare, education campuses, retail centres, large industrial facilities, residential estates. - Lead the integration of building-side water + fire systems with the broader site civil and process infrastructure. - Peer-review work of junior engineers; set design standards - Co-lead client engagement at the senior technical level. - Pr Eng or Pr Tech Eng registered. - Mentor and develop junior engineers. Detail: Key responsibilities Wet services design - Domestic hot and cold-water reticulation per SANS 10252-1, including hot water generation design and specification. - Internal wastewater and condensate drainage per SANS 10252-2 and SANS 10400-P. - Water supply storage and booster pump station design, including pump selection and pressure management. - Soil and wastewater pump station design. - Specification of packaged water and wastewater treatment plant requirements in coordination with process engineers. - Conditional assessments of existing building services on retrofit and refurbishment engagements. Fire engineering design - Fire-water reticulation for hydrants and hose reels per SANS 10400-W. - Sprinkler systems per SANS 10287 / BS EN 12845 / NFPA 13 as applicable. - Fire pumps and pressure management; sizing and selection. - Fire-water storage sizing and basis-of design reporting. - Fire safety strategies and fire signage in accordance with SANS 10400-T and related codes. - Integration with detection / alarm (SANS 10139), smoke control, and means-of escape design. - Fire-compliance assessment within Company's water audit product — code compliant fire reserves, reticulation and pump adequacy, assessed and reported within the audit standard. Sustainability integration - Sustainable urban drainage systems (SUDS) — attenuation, storage, infiltration devices, softened conveyance. - Rainwater and greywater harvesting design. - Recycling and reuse of HVAC condensate, process water, and stormwater. - Integration of groundwater (from borehole abstraction) into building-side reticulation. Documentation across all six ECSA stages - Stage 1–2: Inception, briefing, basis-of design, options analysis. - Stage 3–4: Developed and detailed design, drawings, specifications, BoQs, tender documentation, contractor evaluation. - Stage 5–6: Construction administration, site inspection, commissioning, performance verification, close-out, O&M manuals. Cross-disciplinary coordination - Coordinate with architects, civil and structural engineers, mechanical engineers (HVAC), electrical engineers, process engineers (groundwater / treatment), and (implementation). - Resolve interface issues; produce clear deliverables for adjacent disciplines. Productisation & methodology - Codify your design work into reusable templates and design tools. - Contribute to aQco's wet services and fire engineering design standards — including the fire-assessment methodology within our audit product. show more...
