Job Title: Water and Sanitation Engineer Start Date: 2026-08-03 - 2026-09-02 Vacancy Type: Permanent DUR000445 Sectors: Engineering and Technical Location: KwaZulu-Natal , Pietermaritzburg Salary: (medical aid, pension, 13th cheque, Market related, Negotiable) Brief: bulk water|civil engineer|hydraullic modeling|sanitation|water|water treatment An established consulting engineering practice is seeking an experienced Water and Sanitation Engineer or Engineering Technologist to join its Water and Sanitation team in Pietermaritzburg or Durban. This role is suited to a technically strong professional who can independently plan, design and deliver water and sanitation infrastructure projects while providing project leadership, client coordination and guidance to junior staff. Detail: Key Responsibilities: Plan and design bulk water, water reticulation, sewer and sanitation infrastructure. Undertake hydraulic modelling, design calculations and technical investigations. Prepare detailed drawings, bills of quantities, specifications, reports and tender documentation. Work on pump stations, water treatment works, wastewater treatment works, boreholes and associated civil structures. Manage project scope, programme, cost and technical deliverables. Coordinate clients, municipalities, water authorities and other project stakeholders. Support project delivery from planning and design through construction and close-out. Review technical work and provide guidance and mentorship to junior staff. Participate in proposals, tenders and business-development activities. Undertake occasional site visits and construction-related responsibilities. Requirements: BSc, BEng or BTech qualification in Civil Engineering ECSA: Professionally Registered (advantageous) or nearing professional registration Minimum of six years or more of relevant water and sanitation experience. Experience gained within a consulting engineering environment. Demonstrable experience in the planning, design and documentation of water and sanitation infrastructure. Experience with hydraulic modelling, design calculations, drawings, BOQs and technical specifications. Sound understanding of water conveyance systems, sewer infrastructure and pump stations. Ability to manage projects or work packages with limited supervision. Strong client-facing, stakeholder-management and communication skills. Ability to mentor and support junior technical staff. Advantageous Experience: Experience across ECSA Stages 1–6. Water treatment works or wastewater treatment works design experience. Leadership of multidisciplinary design teams. Construction-stage project delivery and close-out. Project management experience covering time, cost and scope. PrCPM registration with SACPCMP. NQF Level 8 qualification. Business development, proposal or tender experience. Active involvement in professional or industry associations. Experience on municipal or water-authority projects valued between approximately R20 million and R300 million. Software: Experience with a combination of the following will be beneficial: Civil Designer Civil 3D IDAS Bentley OpenFlows EPANET AutoCAD Bill QGIS Google Earth Microsoft Office Candidates are not necessarily expected to be advanced users of every package listed, but should be able to demonstrate independent use of relevant civil design and hydraulic-modelling software.
