To ensure the optimal balance between exceptional customer service and cost efficiency by managing warehouse operations safely, efficiently, and effectively while driving continuous improvement, maintaining inventory accuracy, and leading high-performing teams.
Duties & Responsibilities
Health, Safety and Environmental Compliance
- Ensure compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act, Road Traffic Act, and all relevant legislation.
- Lead and actively participate in the Safety, Health and Environmental Committee.
- Enforce safe pallet stacking practices and maintain 5S housekeeping standards.
- Conduct Planned Job Observations (PJOs) and promote a proactive safety culture.
- Ensure the safe operation of forklifts and company vehicles within and outside the distribution centre.
- Maintain a safe working environment for employees, contractors, and visitors.
Warehouse Operations
- Supervise warehouse staff, including Forklift Drivers and Pickers.
- Ensure accurate, efficient, and timely receiving, picking, loading, and dispatch of stock.
- Meet warehouse turnaround time (TAT) targets.
- Coordinate loading activities in line with distribution load plans.
- Ensure all documentation is accurately completed and maintained.
- Record warehouse activities in the ERP system to ensure visibility and governance.
Inventory and Stock Management
- Maintain accurate inventory through regular stock counts and variance investigations.
- Apply stock rotation principles (FIFO/FEFO where applicable) to minimise stock ageing.
- Monitor product quality by inspecting packaging before storage and dispatch.
- Ensure accurate recording of stock returns and inventory movements.
- Maintain effective communication with Warehouse Controllers and Stock Clerks.
Customer Service
- Deliver consistent, high-quality service by meeting customer requirements.
- Resolve customer queries, complaints, and loading discrepancies within agreed service levels.
- Implement corrective actions to prevent recurring operational issues.
- Build and maintain positive customer relationships through reliable service delivery.
People Management
- Communicate the company's vision, mission, values, and strategic objectives to employees.
- Manage employee performance through coaching, mentoring, and regular feedback.
- Foster a positive industrial relations environment.
- Manage employee attendance, punctuality, overtime, and workforce planning.
- Develop staffing plans aligned with operational forecasts.
- Ensure employees understand and comply with company policies and procedures.
Food Safety and Quality
- Promote and enforce compliance with the company's Food Safety Policy and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs).
- Ensure adherence to food safety procedures, PPE requirements, personal hygiene, and contamination prevention measures.
- Participate in food safety training and competency assessments.
- Report food safety risks, illnesses, and quality concerns promptly.
- Support the organisation in maintaining GFSI certification and continuous improvement initiatives.
Financial Management
- Identify and implement cost-saving and process optimisation opportunities.
- Monitor monthly operational performance and provide corrective action plans where necessary.
- Ensure efficient use of labour, equipment, and warehouse resources.
- Maintain compliance with company financial policies and procedures.
Desired Experience & Qualification
- Grade 12 (Matric); tertiary qualification in Supply Chain, Logistics, or Warehouse Management is advantageous.
- Previous supervisory experience in a warehouse or distribution environment.
- Sound knowledge of warehouse operations, inventory management, and ERP systems.
- Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety legislation and food safety standards.
- Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Computer literacy (Microsoft Office and warehouse management systems).
