Our client, a well-established supplier of steel and industrial hardware products, is seeking a strong, energetic and hands-on Warehouse Manager to take full responsibility for the efficient operation of its warehouse, yard and dispatch functions.
This is not a desk-based management position. The successful candidate must be highly visible on the warehouse floor, actively involved in daily operations and capable of leading a busy team in a demanding steel and industrial hardware environment.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Take full responsibility for the daily operation of the warehouse, yard and dispatch departments
- Lead, supervise and motivate warehouse, receiving, picking, loading and delivery teams
- Maintain a strong, visible and hands-on presence on the warehouse floor
- Ensure all incoming stock is accurately received, checked, recorded and stored
- Oversee the accurate picking, packing, staging and loading of customer orders
- Ensure customer orders and branch transfers are dispatched correctly and on time
- Plan daily workloads, allocate staff and monitor productivity
- Coordinate vehicle loading and delivery schedules
- Ensure steel, tube and industrial hardware products are handled and stored safely
- Monitor stock accuracy and investigate shortages, damages and discrepancies
- Conduct cycle counts, monthly stock counts and annual stocktakes
- Implement controls to minimise stock losses, damages and incorrect deliveries
- Maintain high standards in the warehouse
- Enforce health and safety requirements, PPE standards and safe operating procedures
- Ensure forklifts, cranes, vehicles and warehouse equipment are used correctly and maintained
- Manage staff attendance, performance, discipline, training and development
- Work closely with sales, purchasing, administration and transport departments
- Resolve operational delays, customer collection issues and delivery-related queries
- Identify opportunities to improve warehouse efficiency, productivity and service levels
Desired Experience & Qualification
- Grade 12 or an equivalent qualification
- A relevant warehousing, logistics or operations qualification will be advantageous
- Proven experience managing a busy and big warehouse and dispatch operation
- Experience within the steel, tube, industrial hardware, building materials or related industry is essential
- Strong leadership, discipline and staff-management skills
- Must be physically energetic, practical and willing to work alongside the team when required
- Excellent planning, organisational and problem-solving abilities
- Strong understanding of warehouse safety, housekeeping and operational procedures
- Experience conducting stock counts and investigating stock variances
- Computer literate, with experience using warehouse or ERP systems
- Valid driver’s license
- Stable employment history
- Able to work under pressure and meet strict operational deadlines
