Introduction

A well-established national steel distributor is seeking an experienced Warehouse Manager to take ownership of its main Cape Town warehouse operation..

This is a high-volume steel distribution environment , rather than a conventional warehouse. The site operates as a central distribution point servicing three branches , with significant daily movement of steel, tube and related products.

You will be responsible for the full warehouse operation, including receiving, dispatch, stock control, inter-branch transfers, loading accuracy and the performance of the warehouse team .

Stock accuracy is critical to the profitability of the business. The successful candidate will therefore need to be highly disciplined, operationally strong and comfortable working in an environment where stock variances, incorrect loads and poor controls are not acceptable .

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Take full operational responsibility for the receiving, dispatch and warehouse functions .
  • Lead, manage and develop warehouse supervisors and operational staff.
  • Ensure accurate and controlled receiving, put-away, picking, loading and dispatch processes .
  • Maintain strict stock control, including daily stock counts, reconciliations and three full stock counts annually .
  • Investigate and resolve stock discrepancies and implement corrective controls.
  • Manage inter-branch stock transfers to and from the three branches serviced by the Epping operation.
  • Verify all loads following the night shift, ensuring the correct products, sizes and quantities are loaded before vehicles leave the yard.
  • Ensure orders are accurately picked, prepared and dispatched according to customer and branch requirements.
  • Manage the administrative flow and documentation associated with receiving, dispatch and retail collections.
  • Monitor the condition and maintenance requirements of vehicles and warehouse equipment.
  • Ensure the yard and warehouse operate safely and efficiently, including the management of forklifts, lifting equipment and cutting operations .
  • Implement and enforce warehouse procedures, policies and operational controls.
  • Monitor productivity, housekeeping, turnaround times and overall warehouse performance.
  • Work closely with management, sales, logistics and branch teams to ensure efficient product flow and service delivery.

Desired Experience & Qualification

  • Proven experience as a Warehouse Manager, Warehouse Supervisor or similar senior warehouse management position .
  • Steel industry experience is essential – specifically steel and tube, reinforcing/rebar or a closely related steel distribution environment.
  • Experience managing a high-volume warehouse or steel yard .
  • Strong knowledge of steel products, stock movement, loading and dispatch processes .
  • Proven experience with stock control, stock counts, inventory reconciliation and investigating variances .
  • Previous experience managing warehouse supervisors and operational teams.
  • Strong administrative and organisational ability, with good attention to detail.
  • Comfortable working with stock documentation, delivery paperwork and operational reporting.
  • Ability to manage a physically demanding yard environment and maintain strict operational discipline.
  • Valid driver's licence and own reliable transport.

Advantageous

  • Experience using Syspro or a similar ERP system.
  • Previous experience within a distribution centre or multi-branch operation .
  • Experience managing inter-branch stock transfers.
  • Health and safety training relevant to warehousing, steel yards or industrial environments.
  • Experience with forklifts, lifting equipment and steel cutting operations.

Package & Remuneration

  • R50,000 Cost to Company per month , negotiable based on experience.
  • Medical aid and provident fund benefits commence from the start date.
  • Company contributes 50% towards medical aid

Working Hours

Monday – Friday: 07:30 – 17:00

Management is expected to be on site earlier where operational requirements dictate.

Saturday: Management roster, approximately one Saturday per month , 08:00 – 13:00. Saturday loading also takes place in preparation for Monday deliveries.
