An opportunity is available for a qualified and experienced RIGGER to join an established industrial engineering and site-services environment in Richards Bay.
- The successful candidate will form part of a multi-disciplinary technical team and must be comfortable working in an industrial environment where flexibility, teamwork, safety awareness and the ability to assist with a variety of site-related activities are essential.
- The position is suited to a practical, hands-on individual who is not restricted to rigging activities only and who is willing and able to multi-task and support other operational, mechanical, maintenance, fabrication and general site activities when required.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Carry out rigging and lifting activities safely and efficiently in accordance with approved procedures and site requirements.
- Select, inspect and correctly use lifting equipment, rigging gear, slings, shackles, chains, hooks and associated lifting accessories.
- Correctly sling, secure, balance and guide loads for lifting and positioning operations.
- Assist with the movement, positioning, installation, removal and replacement of machinery, equipment, structures and components.
- Work with cranes, hoists, lifting equipment and other material-handling equipment as required and within the employee's level of competency and authorisation.
- Communicate effectively with crane operators, supervisors and other members of the site team during lifting operations.
- Act as banksman / signalman when required and provide clear and correct lifting signals.
- Assess loads and lifting requirements before commencing work and identify potential hazards or unsafe conditions.
- Ensure lifting equipment and rigging accessories are used within their rated capacity and intended application.
- Conduct pre-use visual inspections of rigging equipment and report defective, damaged or unsafe equipment immediately.
- Assist with equipment installation, dismantling, maintenance, shutdown and project-related activities.
- Assist mechanical, fabrication, maintenance and general site teams when required.
- Perform general hands-on site duties outside of core rigging activities when reasonably required by the operational team.
- Assist with the handling and positioning of structural steel, machinery, components, materials and other industrial equipment.
- Work safely at industrial sites and comply with all applicable occupational health, safety, environmental and site-specific requirements.
- Maintain good housekeeping within the work area and ensure tools and equipment are correctly stored after use.
- Report incidents, near misses, unsafe conditions, damaged equipment and other operational concerns to the relevant supervisor.
- Follow work instructions, method statements, risk assessments and permit-to-work requirements where applicable.
- Work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team and provide assistance to colleagues when required.
- Perform other reasonable duties associated with the position and operational requirements of the business.
Desired Experience & Qualification
- Recognised Rigger trade qualification / certificate / competency documentation — essential.
- Candidates must be able to provide proof of qualification / “papers” for verification.
- Previous practical experience as a Rigger within a heavy industrial, engineering, construction, maintenance, manufacturing or similar environment.
- Demonstrated experience with rigging, slinging, lifting and positioning of industrial equipment, machinery, structures or components.
- Practical knowledge of lifting tackle, rigging equipment and associated lifting accessories.
- Ability to work safely around cranes, hoists and other lifting equipment.
- Previous experience working on industrial sites will be highly advantageous.
- Experience working as part of a multi-disciplinary technical or site team.
- Mechanical, fabrication, maintenance, construction or other relevant practical experience will be advantageous.
- Ability and willingness to perform additional hands-on duties outside of core rigging responsibilities.
- Good understanding of workplace health and safety requirements.
- Ability to read and understand basic work instructions, safety documentation and lifting-related information.
- Medically fit to perform physically demanding industrial work and, where applicable, site medical requirements.
- Valid driver's licence will be advantageous.
- Working-at-heights training / certification will be advantageous where applicable.
- Relevant additional lifting, rigging, safety or equipment-related training will be advantageous.
- Traceable & contactable references.
- Local residency in Richards Bay or surrounding areas preferred; relocation may be considered for an exceptional candidate.\
