Job description

• To provide effective and efficient maintenance and repair services on security technology systems. To provide input to technical specifications for the development, design, and systems integration across multiple security technologies.

Responsibilities

• Plan and present the long- term replacement cycle of obsolete electronic security equipment across all campuses.
• Ensure compliance in terms of OHS Act as well as policies and procedures to prevent incidents/accidents or injuries on the job.
• Ensure that technical personnel comply with the OHS standards.
• Perform quality assurance inspections on jobs completed by Technical Assistants and sign- off on job cards.
• Plan, prepare, and conduct preventative maintenance and repairs of security equipment
• Plan, prepare and conduct high technology security equipment installations in line with the security strategy and applicable minimum standards in this regard.
• Prepare and conclude procurement requests in terms of UJ procurement procedures when necessary to complete a technical installation or maintenance project.
• Ensure compliance in terms of UJ policies and Standard Operating Procedures regarding UJ Asset Register on the FAR.
• Conduct training sessions in respect of the repair and maintenance of complicated security equipment and installations, e.g. RF transmissions and communications, GSM communications and relay controls.
• Assist Security and Project Managers with electronic and wiring specifications and definitions
• Ensure the monthly capturing of the most recent repair-rate statistics in the Protections Services Dashboards.
• Conduct Technical Surveillance Countermeasures at prioritised high security sites on demand.
• Implement innovative security technology, build plans for installations that affect the organisation.
• Maintain a professional and high- level security system and service to ensure the full protection of employees, as well as facilities and property.
• Conduct specialised forensic operations to extract information from systems and equipment to submit to court as evidence.
• Ensure the security systems installed are continuously upgraded in line with technological development.
• Ensure that completed work adhere to governance and legislative requirements.
• Correctly apply policies, practices, standard procedures, and legislation in the delivery of work outputs.
• Perform operations in a specialised area to technical specifications and contribute to operational result delivery within predefined standards.
• Use practical and applied knowledge and judgment to arrive at decisions.
• Develop and maintain productive working relationships with peers and UJ role players to achieve predefined objectives.
• Apply practical knowledge and act authoritatively on methods, systems and procedures identify trends and potential risks.

Minimum requirements

• A Diploma NQF 6 in a technical field of study.
• Three 3 to five 5 years of job-related experience.
• PSIRA registered.
• Driver's license.
• Documented experience in the installation and maintenance of:
• Electronic alarm systems
• Electric fence systems
• Gate motor systems
• CCTV and video intercom systems
• Access control systems
• Project management certification or 3 years of project management experience.

Recommendations

• Experience in the installation and maintenance of wired and wireless networks.
• Understanding of different types of cables, e.g., Cat5e vs RG59 and optical fibre.
• SAIDSA certification as an installer.
• Impro Technologies certified installer IXP 400i / Portal.
• CCTV installer certification.
• Knowledge of basic electricity/electronics and fault finding.
• A certification in networking.

Working Conditions

• Work involves the maintenance, repair, and upgrading of security technology systems, including CCTV, access control, alarms, and related infrastructure.
• Frequent use of specialised diagnostic equipment, hand tools, power tools, and computers for system configuration and troubleshooting.
• May be required to carry, lift, or transport technical equipment, cabling, and components typically up to 20kg.
• Based partly in a workshop/office environment and travel frequently on/off-site across university buildings and facilities.
• Occasional work at heights e.g., ladders, scaffolding, or elevated platforms.
• Standard working hours apply, but extended or irregular hours may be required during urgent repairs, security incidents, or time-sensitive installations.
