Technical Sales Engineer

Introduction

Purpose

A geosynthetics manufacturing company is seeking a Technical Sales Engineer who will be responsible for promoting and selling technically advanced civil engineering solutions and products across South Africa. This role combines deep technical knowledge with strong sales and communication skills to support infrastructure, construction, and engineering firms. The successful candidate will act as the technical advisor and product expert during the sales process, ensuring that customer needs are accurately identified and met.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Plan and prepare to host presentations at engineering consultants as well as key contractors to build relationships and create brand awareness

• Conduct site visits and assessments to understand engineer/contractor's requirements

• Develop and propose tailored technical solutions based on civil engineering principles

• Research and report writing together with management for technical paper submissions for conferences

• Develop training material and conduct training for both internal and external business interests

• Keep up to date with relevant industry standards, regulations, and trends

• Proactively identify and qualify new sales opportunities

• Achieve or exceed sales targets and contribute to the company's growth

• Build and maintain strong relationships with engineers and contractors

• Identify new sales opportunities and generate leads through site visits, industry events, and market research

• Conduct daily visits to key customers, projects, engineers and the office

• Motivate for resource allocations for any new opportunities

• Monitor competitor activity proactively, providing monthly feedback

• Conduct presentations, technical seminars, on-site product demonstrations and commercial proposals in writing to all customers

• Ensure all customer requirements and complaints are communicated appropriately and dealt with timeously

• Collaborate with internal teams including production, customer service, logistics, and product development to deliver customer solutions efficiently

• Communicate regularly with the Manager regarding the status of sales and current projects

Core Competencies

• Proven sales and negotiation skills

• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and specifications

• Effective communication, presentation and interpersonal skills

• Self-driven with strong time management and organizational skills

• Familiarity with AutoCAD, Civil 3D, or MS Project is an advantage

• Ability to understand and articulate complex technical concepts

• Familiarity with BBBEE compliance, local procurement, and government tender processes

• Strong technical knowledge in civil engineering principles and applications in the geosynthetic market or similar

• Solid understanding of South African construction and civil engineering markets, including public sector procurement processes

• Strong business acumen and sales drive

Desired Experience & Qualification

Qualifications

• Tertiary qualification in Civil Engineering / Environmental

Experience

• 2–5 years proven work experience in technical sales, preferably within the construction industry

• Own vehicle and valid driver's license and willingness to travel nationally and/or internationally if/when the need arises
