Technical Sales Engineer HVAC Industry

Introduction

We are seeking an experienced and commercially driven Technical Sales Engineer to join our Gauteng-based HVAC team.

This role goes beyond traditional sales and requires someone who can operate comfortably across both technical engineering and commercial sales . The successful candidate will be responsible for identifying opportunities, understanding technical requirements, developing suitable HVAC solutions, supporting consultants and customers, preparing quotations and converting opportunities into profitable orders.

The role requires a strong technical understanding of HVAC systems, equipment selection, controls and system integration, together with the commercial ability to build relationships and manage projects from initial concept through to order placement and ongoing customer support.

Duties & Responsibilities

Sales & Business Development

• Develop new business within the HVAC and chilled water market.

• Identify and pursue projects proactively.

• Build relationships with consulting engineers, contractors, developers, facility managers and end users.

• Conduct customer and consultant visits.

• Maintain a strong sales pipeline and provide accurate forecasts.

• Identify opportunities for equipment, controls, services, upgrades and lifecycle support.

• Achieve agreed sales and profitability targets.

Technical Support & Equipment Selection

• Review enquiries, specifications, drawings and tender documentation.

• Understand project requirements and recommend appropriate technical solutions.

• Carry out equipment selections and assist with system design considerations.

• Prepare technical submissions, datasheets and compliance documentation.

• Provide technical support to consultants, contractors and customers.

• Assist with value engineering and alternative solutions.

• Liaise with suppliers on technical and non-standard requirements.

Controls & System Integration

• Understand HVAC control philosophies and sequences.

• Have working knowledge of BMS/BAS, BACnet and Modbus.

• Understand sensors, valves, actuators, dampers, VSDs and equipment interfaces.

• Understand chilled water plant control principles, including chiller staging, pump sequencing, differential pressure and temperature control.

• Liaise with controls specialists where detailed integration support is required.

Consultant & Specification Support

• Develop relationships with consulting engineers and HVAC specifiers.

• Conduct product presentations and technical workshops.

• Assist with design, equipment selection and specifications.

• Provide technical input and support during the development of HVAC solutions.

• Track projects from concept through tender and order placement.

• Promote the company as a trusted technical partner.

Project & Customer Support

• Ensure effective technical and commercial handover after order placement.

• Coordinate with Operations, Logistics, Service and After-Sales.

• Assist with technical queries and site requirements.

• Maintain customer relationships and identify repeat business, service, retrofit and upgrade opportunities.

Desired Experience & Qualification

Minimum Requirements

• Diploma or Degree in Mechanical Engineering, HVAC, Refrigeration or a related field.

• Relevant HVAC industry experience.

• Good understanding of HVAC equipment, systems and applications.

• Working knowledge of HVAC controls and BMS integration.

• Ability to interpret technical drawings, specifications and schedules.

• Strong technical problem-solving ability.

• Commercial awareness and confidence dealing with customers and consultants.

• Strong communication and presentation skills.

• Strong Microsoft Office skills.

• Valid driver's licence.

• Based in or willing to relocate to Gauteng.

• Willingness to travel.
