Introduction

The Technical Manager is responsible for ensuring the technical integrity, accuracy, and effective coordination of customer enquiries and orders from quotation, through fabrication, and to delivery. The role provides technical leadership and oversight across internal sales, design, quality assurance, production-related activities and end of line quality control.  This entails ensuring that technical information, drawings, specifications, systems, and processes are accurately controlled, and aligned with company strategy, standards and manufacturing requirements. Through effective cross-functional coordination, the Technical Manager supports product quality, efficient production, reliable delivery, and a high standard of customer service.

Within the Company, the internal sales and design functions are seen as an integral and seamless part of the manufacturing value chain and the only way to ensure success in our strategic objectives is to ensure that jobs are specified correctly at their start point, adequate QA is built into the processes and that we do not accept sub-standard outcomes.  The Technical Manager is therefore of critical importance to ensuring that the first steps of the value chain are initiated accurately and timeously and that quality is integrated in each step of the journey.

Duties & Responsibilities

The Technical Manager’s primary duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Support the internal sales team in responding to technical issues around customer enquiries.
  • Ensure accurate and consistent technical advice is provided, in line with approved product specifications and applications.
  • Review and oversee from quotation phase the pricing, technical drawings, and lead times prior to fabrication.
  • Lead/coordinate the interface with the factory on technical matters, resolving design, specification, and production-related challenges.
  • Manage the inbound and outbound quality control and quality assurance in the company.
  • Coordinate with stores and procurement to ensure material availability and delivery dates.
  • Ensure accurate and disciplined use of the ERP system by the internal sales team.
  • Assist in further ERP development in the drive to achieve strategic objectives.
  • Manage and control the company’s internal drawing system, ensuring drawings are technically correct, approved, revision-controlled, and available to relevant departments.
  • Improve the design environment of the company be it by systems, technology and/or training.
  • Monitor customer orders from quotation to fabrication and from fabrication to delivery.
  • Ensure clear communication with the factory and timely resolution of technical issues.
  • Consolidate market, customer, and competitor feedback and report relevant insights to management.
  • Act as the pivot between the company and customers around product or process problems.
  • Enforce compliance with company policies, quality management systems, procedures, and technical change-control requirements within the internal sales function.
  • Ensuring a strong administrative and systems approach towards all internal processes.
  • Conducting training with internal sales staff to ensure multi-skilling within the department.

Desired Experience & Qualification

The following are the minimum requirements for a person in the Technical Manager position with regards to perform the jobs tasks adequately:

  • Proven experience in a production environment with technical sales, QA and design office exposure.
  • Strong understanding of industrial products preferably electrical components.
  • Temperament to handle frequent attention changes (switching) in an environment with many moving parts.  The role is a busy, hands-on role that requires a technical all-rounder.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Enjoyment of the whole dynamic of the customer interface
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office software (specifically Word, Excel and Outlook).
  • Ability to compile and interpret technical drawings and specifications.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Team player with a proactive attitude and problem-solving mindset.
  • Good physical health.
  • Hold a valid driver’s license and provides own transport.

Beneficial Experience

The following will be beneficial within the position’s requirements

  • Experience in a manufacturing company (specifically jobbing) or working with electrical products.
  • Knowledge of industry standards and certifications (e.g., UL, IEC, ISO).
  • Familiarity with drawing office software and processes.

Qualifications

Education           : A minimum of a Technical qualification (B.Eng Engineering, B-Tech Engineering, ND)

Language           : English literate (able to read and write).
