Job description

• To work under the supervision of the Technician: Technical Security with the installation, configuration, and maintenance of technical security systems in support of the Division of Protection Services.

Responsibilities

• Conduct installations, configurations, maintenance, and repairs of technical security systems as per the manufacturer and departmental standards.
• Perform QA with the Technician or on instructions from the technician.
• Assist the service providers/contractors with access to UJ security systems during project installations and verify that the equipment installed is live /online on the systems.
• Assists with scheduled maintenance, cleaning, and minor adjustments to electronic devices, including but not limited to access control, video surveillance, and intrusion detection devices. Ensures equipment is up to date and operational.
• Keep an inventory of all tools, equipment, and consumables.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.
• Complete and update the weekly fault reporting spreadsheet.
• Attend to all fault requests on the Incident management system within the turnaround time.
• Contractor management, ensuring that all contractors complete maintenance work within the allocated time and quality installations are done.
• Verify that all equipment worked on is live/online on the relevant systems.
• Compile daily and weekly reports and send them to the technician/manager on time.
• Ensure that email requests are acknowledged and responded to timeously.
• Compile procurement specifications and requests as pre-requirements in terms of UJ procurement procedures.
• Responds to phone, email, voice mail, electronic, verbal, and written work orders.
• Record serial numbers and location on all equipment installed and follow through with reports as required for documentation of all official records.
• Perform Quality Assurance checks of installations, configurations, and maintenance work on technical security systems.
• Ensure work done complies with safety regulations to prevent injuries on the job.
• Ensure that the workshop, work areas and stores are clean, and tools are stored away to ensure tidiness in the work area.
• Ensure that the work performed complies with the acceptable standards before performing sign-off/ obtaining sign-off from the Technician or client.
• Attend training sessions in line with the job function, including both professional or technical skills development related to security technologies or business processes.

Minimum requirements

• A Grade 12/Matric Certificate NQF 4.
• Three 3 to four 4 years' experience.
• PSIRA registered.
• A valid drivers' licence.
• Documented experience in the installation and maintenance of:
• Electronic alarm systems.
• Electric fence systems.
• Gate motor systems.
• CCTV and video intercom systems.
• Access control systems.
• Experience in the installation and maintenance of wired and wireless networks.

Recommendations

• Candidates with NQF Level 5 qualification or higher may receive preference.
• SAIDSA certification as an installer.
• Impro Technologies certified installer IXP 400i / Portal.
• CCTV installer certification.
• Knowledge of basic electricity/electronics and fault finding.
• A certification in networking.

Working Conditions

• Based partly in a workshop/office environment and partly on-site across university premises, with travel between university buildings, campuses, or facilities regularly required.
• Work involves assisting with installation, configuration, and maintenance of technical security systems e.g., cameras, alarms, access control devices.
• Frequent use of hand tools, small power tools, computers, and diagnostic equipment.
• May be required to carry, lift, or move technical equipment, tools, and components typically up to 20kg.
• Work may involve standing, bending, or working in confined spaces during system installation and maintenance.
• Regular exposure to outdoor environments and varying weather conditions during site work.
• Occasional work at heights e.g., ladders, platforms when installing or repairing cameras or security devices.
• Prolonged screen use when assisting with configuration, troubleshooting, or monitoring system performance.
• The work environment varies between routine technical tasks and high-pressure situations during urgent repairs or system failures.
• Standard working hours apply, but the role may require extended or irregular hours during urgent repairs, system outages, or high-priority projects.
