Team Leader - Special Cargo, Warehouse and Distribution - Johannesburg

Introduction

The Team Leader – Special Cargo, Warehouse & Distribution is responsible for the effective day-to-day operational planning, coordination and supervision of Special Cargo, Warehouse and Distribution activities.

The successful candidate will work closely with the Special Cargo, Warehouse & Distribution Manager and will be expected to take operational ownership of activities, maintain strong customer relationships, ensure compliance and contribute to departmental profitability and continuous improvement.

Duties & Responsibilities

Operational Management

• Plan and supervise daily Special Cargo, Warehouse and Distribution activities in collaboration with the Department Manager.

• Ensure operational activities are executed efficiently, safely and within agreed timelines.

• Maintain visibility of operational files and ensure activities are followed through to completion.

• Monitor workflow and identify opportunities to improve operational efficiency and procedures.

• Provide operational support and act as backup to the Special Cargo, Warehouse & Distribution Manager during periods of absence.

Customer Management

• Serve as a key communication point for customers.

• Provide timely and accurate updates on operational activities.

• Follow up on customer queries, requirements and complaints.

• Ensure customer expectations are managed effectively throughout the operational process.

Warehouse & Distribution

• Assist with warehouse planning, controls and inventory-related activities.

• Ensure effective coordination of warehouse and distribution operations.

• Maintain appropriate operational controls and accurate allocation of costs to files.

Administration & Financial Control

• Ensure files are invoiced accurately and timeously.

• Allocate operational costs correctly to relevant files.

• Maintain accurate records and operational documentation.

• Prepare and submit weekly departmental reports.

Staffing

• Coordinate the booking of casual labour and replacement staff where required.

• Ensure staffing requirements are aligned with operational demands.

• Foster teamwork and maintain effective working relationships with staff and suppliers.

Compliance, Health & Safety

• Ensure all operational activities comply with applicable Health & Safety regulations and company requirements.

• Promote a strong safety and security culture within the department.

• Identify and address operational risks where required.

Continuous Improvement & Profitability

• Identify opportunities to improve departmental workflow, procedures and operational efficiency.

• Propose new ideas and initiatives that can enhance departmental profitability.

• Contribute to continuous improvement within the Special Cargo, Warehouse & Distribution function.

Desired Experience & Qualification

• Matric / Grade 12.

• Certification in Warehousing & Stock Management.

• Additional logistics/freight forwarding qualifications will be advantageous.

Essential

• Minimum 4 years' experience in a position of responsibility within logistics, freight forwarding or warehousing.

• Freight forwarding experience.

• Hands-on Special Cargo experience.

• Abnormal Loads / Abnormal Cargo experience.

• Proven operational experience involving planning, coordination and execution of cargo movements.

• Warehouse and inventory management experience.

• Experience working with customers, suppliers and operational teams.

Package & Remuneration

• Salary Bracket (R25 000 to R35 000)

• Medical Aid : Medical Aid (Optional): company contributes 50% towards the monthly premium up to a maximum of R1,500.

• Provident Fund : Provident Fund: 7% (company) and 5% (Employee) of the Employee basic salary.
