Systems Developer and Implementation Specialist | Pretoria | 6-Month Fixed-Term Contract

A hands-on systems development opportunity for a specialist who can turn operational requirements into working, adopted business solutions. This role combines software development, database engineering, legacy-system replacement and implementation, with a strong focus on delivering systems that work in the real world.

The successful candidate will take ownership of modernising internal operational systems, including replacing an existing Microsoft Access solution and continuing development of a Supabase-based operational platform. The role covers the full implementation lifecycle, from understanding business processes and designing solutions through to development, data migration, testing, deployment, user training and documentation.

The position will work closely with management and operational teams to translate business requirements into practical functionality. Priority areas include inventory and warehouse management, asset management and technical job management, with further modules and workflows developed as business priorities evolve.

What You'll Do

• Assess and replace an existing Microsoft Access system with a modern SQL-based or cloud-based solution

• Review existing databases, forms, queries, reports, workflows and business logic

• Design database and application architecture for replacement systems

• Clean, map, migrate and validate historical data

• Continue development of the company's Supabase-based operational platform

• Develop inventory and warehouse functionality covering receiving, serialised stock, locations, transfers, picking, delivery, returns and barcodes

• Develop asset-management functionality covering identifiers, serial numbers, locations, warranties, movements, repairs and lifecycle history

• Develop technical job-management functionality covering allocation, scheduling, site attendance, work records, photographs, stock usage, configuration details, customer sign-off and reporting

• Develop and maintain Supabase, PostgreSQL and SQL database structures

• Build relationships, views, functions, validations and audit trails

• Implement authentication, role-based permissions and row-level security

• Develop or integrate APIs where required

• Use Git or GitHub to manage source code and development changes

• Apply appropriate architecture, security, testing and coding standards when using AI-assisted development tools

• Work with management and operational users to understand requirements and map business processes

• Build prototypes, gather feedback and refine functionality for production use

• Conduct functional, data, workflow, permission, mobile and desktop testing

• Coordinate user acceptance testing and resolve defects

• Plan and execute system implementation and data migration

• Configure users and permissions and roll out solutions across relevant departments

• Monitor adoption and resolve issues following implementation

• Prepare user guides, training material and technical documentation

• Train employees, key users and system administrators

• Document system architecture, databases, business rules, permissions, integrations, deployment and backup procedures

• Maintain complete source-code repositories and administrator documentation

• Support the retirement of the legacy system once the replacement is stable and approved

What You Bring

• Practical experience with SQL, PostgreSQL and relational database design

• Experience with Supabase or a comparable cloud backend platform

• Web application development and API integration experience

• Experience migrating data from Microsoft Access or similar legacy systems

• Practical experience with AI-assisted development tools such as Lovable, Cursor, Claude Code, GitHub Copilot or ChatGPT

• Experience with authentication, permissions, testing, deployment and reporting

• Strong business-process analysis and solution-design capability

• Ability to work directly with senior management and non-technical users

• Strong communication and user-training skills

• Experience developing inventory, warehouse, asset-management, field-service, job-management or ERP-related solutions will be advantageous

• A portfolio demonstrating systems personally developed or substantially contributed to

• Ability to explain your role, architecture, tools, challenges, deployment approach and how users interact with the systems you have built

• The Microsoft Access environment is successfully assessed, replaced and retired following business approval

• Required data is accurately migrated, validated and usable

• Priority inventory, warehouse, asset and technical job modules are operational

• Systems are secure, tested, documented and maintainable

• Users and administrators are properly trained and supported

• New functionality is accepted and adopted by the relevant teams

• Source code, database structures, business rules and technical documentation are complete and current

• Operational systems improve the way employees perform their day-to-day work

• Contract deliverables are completed with clear ownership from discovery through implementation and handover
