Structural Engineer

Introduction

FHI Consulting Engineers is growing. With an expanding project portfolio and increased demand for our services, we are creating a new permanent position for a capable and detail-driven Structural Engineer to join our Cape Town team.

This is an additional role created to strengthen our existing team and support the continued growth of the business.

The successful candidate will contribute to the design, analysis and delivery of safe, practical and cost-effective structural solutions across a range of building and infrastructure projects.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Design and analyse reinforced concrete, structural steel, masonry and timber structures

• Prepare structural calculations, specifications, reports and technical documentation

• Develop structural concepts and practical construction solutions

• Review drawings and coordinate structural requirements with architects and other professional consultants

• Conduct site inspections and assess construction quality and compliance

• Identify structural risks and resolve technical issues during design and construction

• Attend project, design and site meetings

• Monitor projects against the agreed scope, programme and budget

• Ensure designs comply with applicable SANS standards, building regulations and engineering codes

• Provide technical guidance to technicians and draughting staff where required

• Maintain clear communication with clients, contractors and project stakeholders

Desired Experience & Qualification

• BEng or BSc degree in Civil Engineering, with a focus on structural engineering

• A minimum of three years’ relevant structural design experience within a consulting engineering environment

• Working knowledge of South African building regulations and structural design standards

• Experience designing reinforced concrete, structural steel, masonry and timber structures

• Proficiency in PROKON SUMO and the relevant PROKON design modules

• Ability to interpret and review architectural and engineering drawings

• Experience conducting site inspections and attending site meetings

• Strong technical writing, problem-solving and communication skills

• A valid driver’s licence and willingness to travel to project sites

• Based in Cape Town or willing to relocate

Experience in residential, commercial and industrial developments will be advantageous, as will knowledge of Revit, AutoCAD or similar drafting and BIM software.
