- The Software Development Manager is responsible for managing the day-to-day software development function to ensure the successful planning, development, testing and delivery of software solutions that support business operations.
- The incumbent leads and develops the software development team, manages software projects, allocates resources, monitors quality standards and ensures that development activities are completed within agreed timelines, budgets and technical requirements.
- The role provides technical guidance to the development team, supports continuous improvement initiatives and ensures compliance with established development standards and organisational procedures.
Education, experience and competencies
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or a related field.
- Honours Degree in Computer Science or Software Engineering. Preferred
- Agile or Scrum certification and Project Management qualification. Advantage
- Minimum 5 years' software development experience.
- Minimum 2 years' experience leading or supervising software developers.
- Experience delivering software projects using Agile methodologies.
- Experience managing software development lifecycles.
Responsibilities
- Lead, coach and support software developers.
- Allocate work and monitor team performance.
- Conduct performance reviews and identify development needs.
- Promote collaboration and teamwork.
- Assist with recruitment and onboarding of developers.
- Manage the delivery of software development projects.
- Ensure software solutions meet business and technical requirements.
- Monitor project schedules and delivery milestones.
- Coordinate software testing and implementation.
- Resolve technical issues escalated by developers.
- Assist with development projects where required.
- Develop project plans in collaboration with the Technical Manager.
- Monitor project progress and report on status.
- Manage project risks and escalate significant issues.
- Coordinate project resources.
- Ensure projects remain within approved budgets and timelines.
- Lead external projects/ development.
- Provide technical guidance to software developers.
- Participate in software design and code reviews.
- Support troubleshooting of complex software issues.
- Recommend improvements to development processes.
- Assist with implementation of new technologies approved by management.
- Ensure adherence to coding standards.
- Promote software quality and maintainability.
- Ensure testing activities are completed.
- Monitor defect resolution.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives.
- Liaise with business users to clarify software requirements.
- Provide regular project updates.
- Work with internal departments to coordinate software releases.
- Support user acceptance testing activities.
- Maintain project documentation.
- Produce project status reports.
- Monitor resource utilisation.
- Maintain software development records.
- Ensure compliance with company procedures.
