The Software Developer (GraphQL Focus) is a domain-specialized software engineer responsible for designing, implementing, and optimizing unified GraphQL API layers to streamline data consumption across diverse web and mobile platforms. Operating at the direct intersection of client-side user experience, backend microservices, and enterprise data graph orchestration, this developer acts as a bridge engineer who eliminates data over-fetching/under-fetching and standardizes frontend-to-backend data delivery. The position requires a focused developer with expert knowledge of schema definition languages, resolver execution logic, and graph federations, alongside a deep understanding of frontend state management.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Design, build, and maintain clean, extendable GraphQL schemas, custom types, mutations, subscriptions, and directive definitions across client applications.
- Write, test, and optimize asynchronous resolver functions that seamlessly bind GraphQL endpoints to underlying microservices, REST APIs, and direct database layers.
- Implement graph federation solutions (e.g. Apollo Federation) and schema stitching to consolidate disparate backend services into a single, unified data graph.
- Diagnose and resolve problem and resource exhaustion risks using batching, caching strategies, and tools like DataLoader and Redis.
- Configure, monitor, and enforce query complexity analysis, depth limiting, and field-level access control to protect the GraphQL engine against denial-of-service threats.
- Collaborate directly with React, React Native, Angular, and mobile application teams to structure query schemas aligned precisely with client state requirements.
- Maintain comprehensive schema documentation, interactive playground environments, and developer tooling to simplify frontend team onboarding and adoption.
- Continuously monitor and profile GraphQL engine operations, tracing query field execution latencies and optimizing payload transport efficiency.
- Implement client-side and server-side caching policies (Apollo Client / Relay) to minimize redundant network round-trips and optimize offline data handling.
- Participate actively in agile ceremonies, providing accurate task estimations, schema design reviews, and continuous improvement inputs within Jira.
Desired Experience & Qualification
- National Diploma, Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a closely related field.
- A minimum of 3 to 5 years of commercial software development experience, with at least 2+ years dedicated hands-on experience building production GraphQL layers.
- Mastery of the modern GraphQL stack, including Apollo Server/Client, GraphQL Java, Hasura, Prisma, or TypeGraphQL, using TypeScript/Node.js or Java.
- Relevant cloud or developer certifications (e.g., AWS Certified Developer, Apollo GraphQL Developer Certification) are advantageous.
- Experience in IT Consulting or Telecommunications domains will be advantageous.
- In-depth understanding of API paradigms, contrasting GraphQL with REST, gRPC, and SOAP architectures in terms of performance and network overhead.
- Demonstrated proficiency using DataLoader, Redis, and query caching implementations to eliminate performance bottlenecks in graph traversal.
- Solid experience integrating GraphQL layers with modern frontend frameworks (React, Next.js, React Native, or Angular) and state management libraries.
- Strong analytical and troubleshooting mindset, with a proven ability to isolate execution bottlenecks across multi-layered distributed query graphs.
- Excellent collaborative and communication skills, with a track record of creating clear schema documentation and establishing smooth developer workflows between teams.
