Job Description

  • The role is responsible for the Management of Mechanical Metallurgy, Non-Destructive Testing and Welding Laboratories according to the relevant procedure on a daily basis. Manage, maintain and repair equipment to ensure effective running of the workshop/laboratory. The preparation and supervision of student practical experiments/laboratory sessions. The provision of support for research projects and activities in the Department of Metallurgy. To ensure that occupational health and safety regulations are followed to minimise risks.

Responsibilities

  • Supervision of Physical Metallurgy practicals.
  • Prepare metallurgical samples.
  • Oversee health and safety in the laboratory.
  • Maintain and calibrations of teaching equipment.
  • Ordering of laboratory consumables.
  • Order laboratory equipment.
  • Design and the fabrication of experimental setups.
  • Installation and commissioning of research equipment.
  • Guide students on research projects execution.

Minimum requirements

  • A Diploma/Certification NQF 6 in Physical Metallurgy or relevant qualification.
  • A minimum three 3 to five 5 years' job-related experience.
  • A minimum of two 2 years' industrial experience.
  • Practical content of the BEng Tech modules.

Recommendations

  • A Bachelor of Engineering Technology in Physical Metallurgy will be an added advantage.
  • Worked in a metallurgical Laboratory.
  • Having a Masters' degree would be advantageous.
  • Registration with the Engineering Council of South Africa ECSA.
