Start free — we apply for you →Our client is seeking an experienced Senior Tailings Engineer to join a multidisciplinary team of engineering specialists. This role offers the opportunity to lead complex tailings engineering projects, oversee facility safety and stability, and contribute to the design and management of tailings storage facilities across South Africa and the African continent.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan, schedule, and manage tailings engineering projects.
- Design new tailings storage facilities, return water dams, and associated infrastructure.
- Conduct surveillance, inspections, and monitoring of tailings storage facilities and return water dams.
- Perform and assist with Engineer of Record (EoR) duties, including annual audit inspections.
- Conduct geotechnical investigations, site assessments, and construction monitoring.
- Perform and oversee slope stability and seepage analyses.
- Manage proposals, appoint subcontractors and sub-consultants, and report project progress to senior management.
- Lead and mentor graduate, junior, and intermediate engineers.
Minimum Requirements
- BEng or BSc Eng in Civil Engineering.
- More than 7 years of tailings engineering experience.
- Professional Engineer registration with ECSA.
- Postgraduate experience in geotechnical engineering will be advantageous.
- Strong understanding of soil mechanics, CPTu testing and interpretation, and laboratory testing of soils and tailings materials.
- Experience in geotechnical investigations and tailings dam breach assessments.
- At least 5 years of experience in limit equilibrium and numerical slope stability and seepage analysis.
- Proficiency in GeoStudio, PLAXIS, or Slide.
- Knowledge of engineering contracts and project management processes.
- Proficiency in MS Office, MS Project or Primavera, and AutoCAD Civil 3D or Modelmaker.
