Senior Tailings Engineer

Introduction

The Senior Tailings Engineer will be responsible for the design, assessment and monitoring of tailings storage facilities, return water dams and associated infrastructure. The role involves managing engineering projects, conducting site inspections, performing stability analyses and providing technical guidance to junior engineers while ensuring compliance with industry standards and project requirements.

Duties & Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

• Design and manage tailings storage facilities and return water dams.

• Conduct site inspections, surveillance and annual audit assessments.

• Perform stability, seepage and slope analysis.

• Manage geotechnical investigations and interpret soil and tailings testing.

• Prepare project proposals, schedules and technical reports.

• Coordinate contractors, consultants and project stakeholders.

• Conduct site visits and oversee construction activities.

• Mentor and develop junior and intermediate engineers.

• Manage project delivery, client relationships and technical reporting.

• Keep up to date with developments in the tailings engineering industry.

Desired Experience & Qualification

Minimum Requirements

• BEng or BSc Eng in Civil Engineering.

• Minimum 7 years' tailings engineering experience.

• Registered Professional Engineer with ECSA.

• Strong knowledge of soil mechanics, CPTu testing and laboratory testing.

• Experience in geotechnical investigations and tailings dam breach assessments.

• Minimum 5 years' experience in slope stability and seepage analysis.

• Proficiency in GeoStudio, PLAXIS or Slide.

• Experience with AutoCAD Civil 3D or ModelMaker.

• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and MS Project or Primavera.

• Valid driver's licence and passport.

• Strong communication, problem-solving, planning and leadership skills.

• Postgraduate geotechnical experience advantageous.
