Duties & Responsibilities
Purpose of the role
A Senior Structural Engineer is responsible for the planning, analysis, design, documentation, and technical delivery of structural engineering projects within a consulting engineering environment. This position requires a technically competent and professionally registered engineer who can independently undertake structural engineering assignments, manage technical deliverables, liaise with clients and other professionals, and provide engineering solutions that comply with applicable legislation, codes, standards, and project requirements. The incumbent will be expected to contribute to the successful delivery of projects from concept and preliminary design through detailed design, construction documentation, construction support, and project close-out.
2. Role Description
The focus of the role will be
2.1 Structural Engineering Design
- Undertake structural engineering investigations, assessments, analysis, and design for a variety of projects;
- Develop practical, safe, economical, and constructible structural solutions;
- Perform structural analysis and design of reinforced concrete, structural steel, masonry, timber, and other appropriate structural systems;
- Prepare and review structural calculations, design reports, specifications, drawings, schedules, and technical documentation;
- Apply relevant South African National Standards (SANS), industry standards, regulations, and recognised engineering practices;
- Ensure designs comply with project specifications, statutory requirements, and applicable health and safety requirements;
- Review and approve technical documentation within the limits of professional competence and delegated authority;
- Identify structural risks and develop appropriate mitigation measures.
2.2 Project Delivery
- Manage structural engineering deliverables and ensure that work is completed within agreed programme, budget, and quality requirements;
- Prepare project scopes, fee proposals, technical submissions, and estimates where required;
- Monitor project progress and communicate technical issues, risks, and potential delays to the Project Manager or relevant senior management;
- Coordinate structural engineering activities with architects, civil engineers, mechanical and electrical engineers, geotechnical engineers, contractors, and other project stakeholders;
- Attend project meetings, site meetings, inspections, and technical workshops;
- Provide technical input during procurement and tender processes;
- Review contractor submissions, shop drawings, method statements, and technical queries where required.
2.3 Construction Support
- Conduct site inspections to assess construction progress and compliance with approved structural designs;
- Respond to Requests for Information (RFIs), technical queries, and site-related structural issues;
- Provide technical clarification and design solutions where site conditions differ from the original design assumptions;
- Review structural work for compliance with approved drawings and specifications;
- Assist with snagging, completion inspections, and project close-out;
- Maintain appropriate records of inspections, instructions, design changes, and technical decisions.
2.4 Technical Leadership and Quality Assurance
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to Graduate Engineers, Candidate Engineers, Technicians, and junior engineering staff;
- Review calculations, drawings, specifications, and other technical deliverables prepared by junior staff;
- Participate in internal technical reviews and design verification processes;
- Promote consistent engineering standards and best practices within the structural engineering team;
- Ensure that project documentation is accurate, complete, and issued in accordance with the company's quality management procedures;
- Identify opportunities to improve design processes, engineering methodologies, and project delivery.
2.5 Client and Stakeholder Management
- Establish and maintain effective professional relationships with clients and project stakeholders;
- Attend client meetings and provide technical advice on structural engineering matters;
- Understand client requirements and translate them into practical engineering solutions;
- Communicate technical information clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders;
- Represent the company professionally at meetings, site visits, industry engagements, and other relevant forums.
2.6 Business Development
- Support the preparation of technical proposals, tenders, fee estimates, and project submissions;
- Identify potential project opportunities and contribute to business development initiatives;
- Maintain relationships with existing clients and contribute to client retention;
- Assist senior management with developing new structural engineering opportunities;
- Contribute to the company's reputation for technical excellence and professional service delivery.

Desired Experience & Qualification
- BSc / BEng in Civil Engineering or Structural Engineering from a recognised institution;
- Professional registration as a Professional Engineer (Pr Eng) with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) ;
- Ten (10) years’ experience post-graduation within a consulting engineering environment:
- Experience managing structural engineering projects and technical deliverables;
- Experience working within a consulting engineering environment;
- Experience coordinating with multidisciplinary project teams;
- Experience with construction monitoring, inspections, and resolving technical site issues;
- Experience mentoring and reviewing the work of junior engineering staff;
- Experience with multidisciplinary infrastructure, commercial, industrial, residential, mining, or public-sector projects;
- Software experience:
- 3D-design software: Robot/Tekla/Sumo/ETABS;
- 2D-design software: Prokon;
- 3D and 2D drafting and detailing software: Revit and AutoCAD;
- Microsoft Word , Microsoft Excel , and Microsoft PowerPoint ;
- Code B Drivers Licence;
- No objections to Security Vetting.
Advantageous
- Postgraduate qualification in Structural Engineering (MSc / MEng);
- Membership / registration of / with relevant professional engineering associations (e.g SAICE, SAISC, IStructE-SA);
- Experience with the following:
- EN design codes;
- ACC and digital workflows;
- Dynamo or other parametric modelling packages;
- Financial and commercial matters and management of projects in accordance with JBCC or other forms of contract;
- Deltek;
- Experience with AI.
