Job Title: Senior Ruby on Rails Developer Start Date: 2026-07-22 - 2026-08-21 Vacancy Type: Permanent JNB008104 Sectors: Business Services Location: Gauteng , JHB - Central Salary: Brief: Job Purpose: As a Senior Ruby on Rails Developer, you'll help shape both our products and our engineering culture Design, build and maintain features across our Ruby on Rails applications. ● Lead the technical implementation of complex product initiatives from planning through deployment. ● Collaborate closely with Product and Design to transform ideas into scalable, intuitive user experiences Design clean APIs and integrations with internal and third-party services Improve application performance, scalability and reliability across the platform. ● Write clean, maintainable and well-tested Ruby code that other developers enjoy working with Use AI throughout the software development lifecycle to accelerate delivery while maintaining high engineering standards Critically review, validate and improve AI-generated code, ensuring correctness, maintainability, security and performance Mentor engineers on modern AI-assisted development practices and responsible AI usage Help evolve our architecture while keeping technical debt manageable Optimise database performance and data models for high-volume transactional workloads. ● Contribute to deployment pipelines, infrastructure and developer tooling Participate in technical planning, architecture reviews and engineering strategy Explore and prototype AI-powered product capabilities that create measurable customer value Help investigate production issues and implement long-term solutions when needed Detail: What we're looking for: 6+ years of professional software development experience Extensive experience building production applications with Ruby on Rails Strong knowledge of Ruby, Rails conventions, and the Rails ecosystem Experience building and consuming RESTful and GraphQL APIs; strong SQL skills with PostgreSQL Experience designing scalable application architecture and domain models Strong understanding of background job processing and asynchronous workflows Experience working with cloud-hosted applications Confidence working across the full stack, including modern JavaScript frameworks Experience with automated testing and CI/CD pipelines Excellent communication skills and a passion for mentoring other engineers A product mindset—you think beyond implementation and care about customer outcomes AI Proficiency (Essential): We're looking for senior engineers who treat AI as a core engineering capability rather than a productivity shortcut Using AI coding assistants such as GitHub Copilot, Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, or similar tools as part of your daily development workflow Accelerating feature delivery with AI while maintaining exceptional engineering quality Writing effective prompts that consistently produce reliable engineering outcomes Critically reviewing, testing and improving AI-generated code rather than accepting it at face value Using AI for debugging, refactoring, documentation, architecture exploration and test generation Understanding the strengths, limitations and trade-offs of modern large language models Evaluating and introducing new AI tools that improve engineering productivity Helping other developers adopt AI effectively while maintaining engineering standards Our stack: Backend: Ruby on Rails PostgreSQL Redis Sidekiq REST and GraphQL APIs OpenTelemetry Sentry New Relic Datadog Frontend: Hotwire (Turbo and Stimulus) JavaScript TypeScript Infrastructure: AWS Docker GitHub Actions CircleCI AI Developer Tooling: Our engineers are encouraged to leverage modern AI tooling, including: GitHub Copilot Cursor Claude ChatGPT MCP-compatible development tools AI-powered code review and debugging tools LLM APIs (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini or similar) show more...
