Introduction

At Allbro, we develop and manufacture electrical enclosures and related engineered products. Our approach brings research and development, product design, tooling and manufacturing together, allowing our engineers to remain involved from the first concept through to the finished product.

We are looking for an experienced Senior Mechanical Design Engineer with strong product development and mould design capability to take ownership of design projects within our R&D and manufacturing environment.

This is a senior, hands-on engineering position for someone who enjoys developing products, solving challenging design problems and seeing their work successfully implemented in production.

The opportunity

You will be responsible for developing new products and improving existing products and tooling—from interpreting requirements and developing concepts through to detailed design, mould development, testing and production handover.

We are looking for someone who can work independently, exercise sound engineering judgement and contribute technical solutions—not simply produce drawings from instructions. You should be comfortable making and explaining design decisions, constructively challenging existing approaches and working closely with toolmakers, manufacturing specialists and suppliers.

Your design responsibility will extend beyond issuing a drawing: you will remain involved until the design has been validated and is ready for production.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Product design and development: Translate customer needs, product requirements and manufacturing constraints into practical mechanical designs. Develop product concepts, functional layouts, components, assemblies, 3D models and detailed manufacturing drawings.
  • Mould and tooling design: Develop production mould designs for injection-moulded products, including the supporting assemblies and detailed drawings required for manufacture. Review existing tooling, develop modifications and assess outsourced mould designs for technical suitability, manufacturability and alignment with product requirements.
  • Design for manufacture and assembly: Review and refine designs to improve manufacturability, assembly, product performance and cost. Work with the toolroom and manufacturing teams to identify potential problems early and resolve recurring design-related issues.
  • Trials, testing and production readiness: Participate in mould trials and product validation, assess results and drive the necessary design corrections. Work with moulding and production specialists to ensure that products and tooling meet the agreed requirements before handover.
  • Engineering documentation and change control: Produce complete, accurate design and manufacturing drawing packs. Maintain CAD models, drawings and revisions within the controlled engineering environment, ensuring that approved changes are properly recorded and communicated.
  • Technical leadership and project ownership: Take responsibility for progressing assigned design projects, communicating risks and meeting agreed milestones. Contribute to design reviews, coordinate technical matters with suppliers and internal departments, and share knowledge with less experienced team members.

Desired Experience & Qualification

We are looking for a candidate with

  • A degree or diploma in Mechanical Engineering, or an equivalent relevant technical qualification supported by substantial design experience.
  • Ideally 10 or more years of relevant mechanical design and product development experience, including independent responsibility for delivering designs into manufacture.
  • Proven, hands-on experience in both product design and injection mould design. Candidates must be able to demonstrate their own technical contribution to completed products and production moulds.
  • Advanced 3D CAD capability, preferably SolidWorks, covering parts, assemblies and detailed manufacturing drawings.
  • Strong practical understanding of design for manufacture, material selection, tooling requirements and manufacturing constraints.
  • Experience working directly with toolmakers, production teams and external tooling suppliers, supported by disciplined documentation and revision-control practices.

Experience that would be advantageous

Experience with GRP/composite products and compression mould design, electrical enclosures, sealing and ingress protection, IP/IK product testing, SolidWorks PDM, and the design of jigs, fixtures or production-support tooling would be valuable.

Where this role fits

The primary focus is product engineering, mechanical design and mould design.

You will work closely with specialist moulding and production personnel during trials, validation and problem-solving. Routine machine setting and the preparation and administration of moulding process instructions are not the primary responsibilities of this position.

However, you will remain accountable for the quality of your designs and for resolving design-related issues identified during tooling manufacture, trials and production implementation.

The person we are looking for

You take ownership of your work, raise concerns early and follow technical issues through to resolution. You are confident in your engineering judgement but willing to listen to the people manufacturing, setting and operating the tooling.

You should enjoy working in an environment where design decisions are tested against practical manufacturing results, and where continuous improvement and knowledge-sharing are part of the job.

Documents to submit with application

Please submit your CV and a brief portfolio or summary of relevant product and mould design projects.

Your examples should explain your personal responsibility, the main engineering challenges and whether the product or mould progressed into production. Non-confidential project summaries are welcome; please do not submit proprietary drawings or information belonging to another employer or client.
