Job Description

The Department is seeking a candidate with extensive industry experience in leading the analysis and design of civil structures. The successful candidate will also participate in academic administration, supervise undergraduate and postgraduate research, and develop a productive research program within their research group. As a senior staff member, he or she will also be expected to participate in the department's strategic planning and decision-making.

Teaching undergraduate and postgraduate modules in the areas of Structural Engineering.
Conducting research in the areas of Structural and Materials Engineering.
Supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate students.
Source research fund for the research group in the department.
Contributing to academic and departmental administration.

Minimum requirements

A Doctorate NQF 10 in a relevant Civil Engineering field for a Senior Lecturer level.
A MEng/MSc/MPhil Engineering degree NQF 9 for a Lecturer level, with at least five 5 years of experience in structural and materials engineering.
Professional registration in the category of engineer or technologist with the Engineering Council of South Africa ECSA, or the candidate must be eligible for professional registration within one year.
A strong and proven background in Structural Engineering, supported by extensive industry experience in the structural analysis and design of major structures.
Evidence of research experience, demonstrated through scholarly publications and/or postgraduate supervision, would be advantageous.
An excellent academic study record in Civil Engineering.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.

Previous tertiary teaching experience at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level would be advantageous.
An extensive network of collaborators from industry.
A high level of independence and self-motivation.
The ability or experience to function in a multidisciplinary environment.

The successful candidate must have good planning and organisational skills.
Team player with good interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to collaborate with colleagues from within and outside UJ.
He/she must have a distinguished record of research and scholarly achievements, together with an extensive network of collaborators from industry.
