Job description

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

  • A Senior Lecturer is expected to make significant contributions to the teaching effort of a department, school, faculty or other organisational unit or an interdisciplinary area. An academic at this level is also expected to contribute to scholarship, research and/or professional activities, and to share relevant skills and expertise in support of community engagement initiatives.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Teaching and Learning

  • Plan and facilitate a range of learning activities, i.e., tutorials, practical classes, demonstrations, workshops, field excursions, etc., to support student engagement and achievement.
  • Initiation and development of subject material.
  • Teach undergraduate and postgraduate classes.
  • Effective teaching methods and strategies, such as explaining concepts clearly, structuring lessons well, checking for understanding, and adapting your approach to help students learn.
  • Provide strong mentoring to students.
  • Engage in scholarly and subject-related work.
  • Actively participate in discipline-related teaching and learning conferences, workshops, and excellence award programmes to stay current and contribute to the broader academic community.
  • Monitor and report on student success rates per module, taking appropriate action to support student throughput.

Development of course material and Supervision

  • Develop and deliver lectures and seminars.
  • Develop and initiate course material to ensure content is current, relevant, and academically rigorous.
  • Supervise postgraduate students engaged in coursework and research programmes.
  • Consultation with students.

Research and Innovation

  • Actively participate in research activities relevant to the discipline, contributing to the broader knowledge base of the School of Economic Sciences.
  • Engage with the research or creative practice component of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, supporting students in developing research skills and academic inquiry.
  • Produce creative outputs that demonstrate an intellectually rigorous and innovative response to the subject, validated through a recognised peer review process.
  • Contribute to a research culture within the school by attending seminars, collaborating with colleagues, and staying current with developments in the field.

Community Engagement

  • Engage with the broader community through activities such as media commentary, public education initiatives, and outreach programmes that reflect the expertise and values of the School of Economic Sciences.
  • Pursue and acknowledge awards, prizes, or grants that recognise meaningful service and contribution at a local, national, or international level.
  • Demonstrate academic citizenship by actively participating in initiatives that benefit a specific community, whether within the institution, the discipline, or society at large.

Ad Hoc

  • Design Responsible for all administrative tasks regarding the above.
  • Student marks and assessment.
  • Align module outcomes and assessments across campuses.
  • Share responsibility for the committee and subject-related assignments as required.
  • Internal and external moderation of assessments.
  • Participate in programme, school and/or faculty meetings.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with industry stakeholders and professional bodies.
  • Additional tasks as delegated by the line manager, in line with the scope of the role, and as operational needs may require.

Minimum requirements

  • PhD in Risk Management, Finance, or a related field NQF Level 10.
  • A minimum of three 3 years' experience in teaching, learning, and research within Risk Management, Banking, Finance, and/or Investment Management.

ADDED ADVANTAGES

  • Membership of professional bodies such as GARP, PRMIA, CFA Society South Africa, SAIFM, or similar professional organisations.
  • Practical or professional exposure to banking, asset management, financial markets, risk management, or financial regulation.
  • Professional accreditation with FRM, PRM, CFA, SAIFM/RPE, or an equivalent professional credential, or progress towards obtaining such credentials.

KEY FUNCTIONAL/TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES

  • Technical Computer literacy in Microsoft Office Word, Excel and PowerPoint, email and internet.
  • Proficiency in R and Python for data analysis, statistical modelling, forecasting and research applications.
  • Ability to integrate R and Python into module content, practical learning activities and assessments.
  • Knowledge of quantitative research methods, statistical analysis and data visualisation techniques.
  • Ability to analyse, interpret and present data using appropriate software and analytical tools.
  • Knowledge of banking risk management, prudential regulation and the South African financial-sector regulatory environment, including the SARB and Prudential Authority where relevant to assigned modules.
  • Knowledge of Basel II/III/final Basel III reforms, capital adequacy, credit risk, market risk, operational risk, liquidity risk and/or investment management.
  • Ability to apply quantitative methods to practical banking, financial-risk and investment-management contexts, including risk measurement, portfolio analysis, regulatory/capital-related applications and data-driven decision-making.
  • Proven track record in post-graduate supervision, demonstrated by the successful supervision of at least one Master's student through to completion, with the degree formally awarded.
  • A proven research track record, evidenced by the publication of at least two peer-reviewed articles in accredited journals within the relevant discipline.
  • A proven commitment to teaching and learning, including a willingness to become involved in students' educational development and wellbeing.
  • Knowledge of modern platforms e.g. whiteboard technology, eFundi, etc. to enhance the ongoing changing of the learning and collaboration environment.

ADDITIONAL DESIRABLE FUNCTIONAL / TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES

  • Practical or professional exposure to banking, asset management, financial markets, risk management or regulation.
  • Professional qualifications, progress toward professional qualifications or memberships such as FRM, PRM, CFA, SAIFM, GARP, PRMIA, CFA Society South Africa or similar.
  • Experience with advanced Excel, VBA, financial modelling, Bloomberg, Refinitiv, DataStream, EViews, Stata, SQL, Power BI or similar tools would be advantageous.

  • Demonstration of language proficiency to function optimally in the various functionally multilingual environments of the NWU.
  • Demonstrated ability to function effectively as a team member within a diverse academic environment, contributing positively to collective goals, working collaboratively with colleagues from different cultural, disciplinary and professional backgrounds, and implementing agreed-upon decisions, policies and instructions in a professional and constructive manner.
  • Good analytical abilities and innovative thinking, as well as ability to be self-driven.

REMUNERATION

The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines
