Job purpose

  • The candidate is expected to engage in teaching and learning, research, supervision and community engagement in the Department.

Responsibilities

Teaching & Learning

  • Prepare and deliver lectures and/or practical sessions for undergraduate and postgraduate students.
  • Design and deliver undergraduate and postgraduate modules in Film and Television, Screen Studies, African Cinema, Streaming platforms, Documentary, Screenwriting and Multimedia Production.
  • Prepare/design and mark assignments, tests, and exams.
  • To prepare materials suitable for teaching and learning at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Research

  • To enhance the Department's research and scholarship profile through a high-quality research portfolio publications and/or examples of research-based practice publications of high standards in line with the Department of Higher Education and Training DHET criteria.
  • Working effectively and collaboratively to develop shared research and scholarship culture.
  • Enhance our links with industry to enable collaborations and knowledge exchange.
  • Generating grant or funding income, where appropriate, to support your research.
  • Attracting and supervising postgraduate research students.

Supervision

  • Recruiting and supervising postgraduate students.
  • Mentoring early career Researchers.
  • Serving on the Departmental Higher Degrees Committee.
  • Acting as a non-assessing Chair during viva voce examinations.

Community engagement

  • Participating in committee meetings within the Department, Faculty and the university.
  • Review research proposals and giving feedback to postgraduate students.
  • Giving talks, presenting at conferences, seminars and workshops.
  • Media appearances and writing op-ed articles.

Administration

  • Act as a creative outputs champion for the Department, both internally and externally.
  • Engaging with appropriate academic leadership and administrative tasks, and playing an active role within the Department, as required by the Head of Department.
  • Organising work integrated opportunities for undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Minimum requirements

  • A PhD NQF 10 in Film and Television or Screen Studies, Broadcast Journalism or any other related field.
  • Minimum of five 5 to seven 7 years' teaching and production experience in a higher education environment.
  • Practical film, television, and screen production skills.
  • Knowledge of Moodle learning management system.
  • Proficiency in Zoom, Moodle, and Microsoft Teams.
  • General editing and production-related software.

Recommendations

  • Proven industry experience at a professional level e.g. broadcast, film productions, or multi-media organisations.
