Job Purpose

  • To teach, conduct research and, where appropriate, interact with the community in order to work towards the mission of the University of Johannesburg.

Responsibilities

Teaching & Learning

  • Teach at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in the various sub-disciplines that constitute Social and Cultural Anthropology and/or other course offerings of the Department

Research

  • Supervise postgraduates and publish research in accredited journals

Administration

  • Administrative roles within the department and faculty

Minimum requirements

  • PhD in Anthropology or cognate discipline
  • 5 Five years' lecturing experience
  • Demonstrated experience in postgraduate supervision, including Honours, Masters and PhD students
  • Discipline based knowledge
  • Experience lecturing undergraduates
  • Experience in curriculum development
  • Experience in compiling study guides
  • Publications in peer reviewed, accredited journals, and book chapters

Competencies and Behavioural Attributes

  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Courteous and professional with good communication skills
  • Organisational and planning skills
  • MS Office skills
  • LLMS such as Moodle and other academic related systems
  • Ability to lecture and assess

Recommendations

  • Demonstrated expertise in Anthropology, with a strong and coherent research profile in one or more relevant areas of the discipline – a focus on the environment would be a preference.
  • Willingness to teach courses offered by the Department of Anthropology and Development Studies broadly.
  • Ability to contribute to the strategic development and visibility of Anthropology within the department, faculty and broader university.
  • Familiarity with blended learning techniques.
  • Evidence of an active and developing research programme, with potential for national and international research recognition.
