  • This vacancy is available in the Department of Civil Engineering Technology, a department with a friendly environment and very supporting colleagues with a strong team spirit. This position resides in a strong teaching and research group called Structures, Geotechnics and Materials SGM. This research group has a large number of undergraduate and postgraduate students working in two well-resourced departmental laboratories, namely, the Heavy Structures Lab and Light Structures Lab. This appointment is aimed at supporting this research group and to teach at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in the areas of structural engineering.
  • The Department is seeking a candidate with extensive industry experience in leading the design and construction of large civil structures. The successful candidate will also participate in academic administration, supervise the research of undergraduate and postgraduate students and develop a productive research program within their research group. As a senior staff member, he or she will also be expected to take part in the strategic planning anddecision-making of the department.

Responsibilities

  • Teaching and developing undergraduate and postgraduate modules in the areas of structural engineering.
  • Conducting research in the areas of structural engineering.
  • Supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate students.
  • Source research fund for the SGM research group.
  • Contributing to academic and departmental administration.

Minimum requirements

  • A doctorate degree in a relevant civil engineering field, or an MEng/MSc/MPhil engineering degree combined with at least five years of directly relevant industry experience.
  • Professional registration in the category of engineer or technologist with the Engineering Council of South Africa ECSA.
  • A well proven background in structural engineering, with extensive industry experience in leading the design and construction of large structures.
  • Evidence of research experience demonstrated by scholarly publications and/or postgraduate supervision.
  • An excellent academic study record in civil engineering.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.

  • The successful candidate must have good planning and organisational skills.
  • Team player and good interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to collaborate with colleagues from within andoutside UJ.
  • He/she must have distinguished record of research and scholarly achievements together with extensive network of collaborators from industry.

Recommendations

  • Professional registration as a professional engineer or engineering technologist with ECSA.
  • Previous tertiary teaching experience at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level.
  • An extensive network of collaborators from industry.
  • A high level of independence and self-motivation.
  • The ability or experience to function in a multidisciplinary environment.
