Senior Java Developer

Our client is looking for a Senior Java Developer who can combine strong technical expertise with business understanding to deliver high-value solutions from their Cape Town office.

What You’ll Be Responsible For

• Drive the development of enterprise-grade Java applications within a retail Point of Sale environment.

• Design and implement new functionality, extensions and software solutions.

• Develop user interfaces using Swing, HTML5 and CSS.

• Build and maintain integrations using REST, SOAP and iDocs.

• Work on integrations between retail systems and SAP.

• Support the integration of POS peripherals and hardware such as payment terminals, printers and fingerprint sensors.

• Develop reports and printing functionality using JasperReports and iText.

• Participate in solution design, prototyping, testing and implementation.

• Produce clear technical documentation and project artefacts, including UML, Wiki and SDK documentation.

• Identify technical challenges, investigate root causes and develop effective solutions.

• Work closely with customers and subcontractors, including senior and executive stakeholders.

• Contribute to an international project environment where accurate communication and documentation are essential.

Minimum Requirements

• 5+ years' experience in Java enterprise development.

• 5+ years' experience developing retail Point of Sale solutions, preferably Java-based.

• Degree or equivalent tertiary qualification in IT, Information Science or a related discipline.

• Strong Java development skills, with solid knowledge of JavaScript, HTML5, CSS and SQL.

• Experience with Spring, Eclipse, SVN, JUnit and Web Services.

• Exposure to GWT and continuous integration tools such as Jenkins and Nexus.

• Good working knowledge of Oracle and/or SQL Server.

• Strong knowledge of SAP integration; SAP retail knowledge will be an advantage.

• Understanding of software development lifecycle methodologies.

• Strong analytical and conceptual abilities.

• Excellent written and verbal English communication skills.

• Strong customer-facing and stakeholder management capabilities.

• A proactive approach, sound business acumen and the ability to think creatively.

• German language skills would be advantageous.

• Strong organisational, time management and documentation abilities.
