Start free — we apply for you →- Bilnor Staffing Solutions' client is seeking a qualified & experienced Senior Generator Set Technician / Generator & Electrical Specialist to join their team in Brits, NW. South African Citizens and those living in the area will be preferred.
- Seeking a highly experienced Generator Set Technician / Generator & Electrical Specialist to take responsibility for the maintenance, diagnostics, repair and reliability of generator sets and associated electrical systems across RGN Plant operations.
- The successful candidate must be competent in both the mechanical diesel-engine side and electrical alternator/generator side, with substantial experience in high-voltage electrical systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Planned, preventative and corrective maintenance of industrial generator sets.
- Mechanical fault-finding and repair of diesel engines and associated systems.
- Electrical fault-finding on alternators, AVR, excitation and generator control systems.
- Diagnose and repair AMF, synchronising, load-sharing and protection systems.
- HV/LV electrical fault-finding, inspections and maintenance within the individual's legal competency and authorisation.
- Generator commissioning, testing and load testing.
- Diagnose control, sensor, wiring and communication faults.
- Conduct root-cause analysis on generator failures and recurring faults.
- Respond to critical generator breakdowns across RGN operations.
- Maintain accurate service, inspection and failure records.
- Identify required spares, repairs and preventative maintenance actions.
- Ensure compliance with OEM specifications, electrical safety requirements and RGN SHEQ procedures.
Technical Requirements Essential
- Relevant recognised trade qualification.
- Minimum 10 years' experience in generator sets, industrial electrical systems or related field.
- Proven experience with industrial diesel generator sets.
- Strong mechanical diesel-engine knowledge.
- Strong alternator and generator electrical knowledge.
- Proven high-voltage electrical experience.
- Generator controls, protection and troubleshooting experience.
- Ability to read electrical schematics.
- Strong diagnostic and fault-finding ability.
- Valid driver's licence.
- Own reliable vehicle suitable for travelling between multiple RGN operations.
Advantageous
- Generator OEM training/certification.
- HV switching competency/authorisation.
- Experience with generator synchronising and load sharing.
- Experience with PLCs and generator control systems.
- Experience with protection relays and HV switchgear.
- Mining/heavy industrial experience.
- Auto-electrical experience on earth-moving equipment, including CAN-bus systems, ECUs, sensors, starting/charging systems and machine electrical diagnostics.
OWN VEHICLE & TOOLING REQUIREMENT
The successful candidate must have his own reliable vehicle and a complete professional set of tools and diagnostic equipment required to perform the duties of the position.
The candidate will be expected to provide and maintain, as a minimum where applicable:
- Complete professional mechanical hand-tool set.
- Electrical testing and diagnostic equipment.
- Quality multimeter and electrical test instruments.
- Clamp meter and appropriate electrical measuring equipment.
- Insulation resistance/megger testing equipment where required.
- Battery testing and charging equipment.
- Generator diagnostic/interface equipment appropriate to the generator brands being supported.
- Auto-electrical diagnostic equipment.
- Appropriate specialist generator and alternator tooling.
- Crimping, termination and electrical repair equipment.
- Laptop/tablet suitable for technical diagnostics and accessing OEM manuals/software.
- Appropriate PPE and electrical safety equipment required for the work being undertaken.
- Any other specialist tooling reasonably required to perform the position safely and professionally.
- The candidate must arrive at the position fully equipped to perform field-service, diagnostic and breakdown work without relying on the company to provide basic personal tools or diagnostic equipment.
- Specialist equipment or tooling that is legally required, site-specific, OEM-specific or impractical for an individual technician to provide may be provided by the company as determined by management.
