Introduction

The Senior Engineer / Technologist is responsible for providing senior-level technical leadership, professional oversight, project management and strategic direction across complex and large-scale engineering projects.

The role involves managing projects throughout the full project lifecycle, from inception, feasibility and planning through design, procurement, construction supervision and project close-out.

The successful candidate will provide expert technical guidance, lead multidisciplinary project teams, manage client relationships, support business development and ensure that all engineering work complies with applicable legislation, regulations, professional standards and ECSA requirements.

  • Registration with ECSA as either:
  • Professional Engineer (Pr.Eng.) , or
  • Professional Engineering Technologist (Pr.Tech.Eng.) .

IDEAL CANDIDATE PROFILE

The ideal candidate will be an experienced and commercially astute engineering professional with strong technical expertise and proven leadership capabilities.

The successful candidate will have a demonstrated track record of managing complex engineering and infrastructure projects, leading multidisciplinary teams, maintaining strong client relationships and delivering technically sound, commercially viable and sustainable engineering solutions.

The individual must be comfortable operating at both a strategic and hands-on technical level, with the ability to make sound professional decisions, manage project risks and mentor the next generation of engineering professionals.

Duties & Responsibilities

2. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

2.1 Strategic Leadership and Project Direction

  • Provide expert technical oversight and governance across multiple large-scale and complex projects.
  • Act as the designated Engineer's Representative (ER), Principal Agent or senior technical representative on major contracts where applicable.
  • Manage contracts under applicable frameworks, including NEC, FIDIC, GCC and other relevant forms of contract.
  • Make high-level decisions regarding engineering methodologies, risk mitigation and technical problem-solving.
  • Review and approve designs, technical reports and contract documentation within the scope of professional registration and delegated authority.
  • Drive the implementation of innovative, sustainable and cost-effective engineering solutions.
  • Provide strategic technical input to senior management and clients.

2.2 Business Development and Client Management

  • Identify and pursue new business opportunities aligned with the organisation's strategic objectives.
  • Lead the preparation of technical and financial proposals, tenders and submissions.
  • Develop and maintain strong, long-term relationships with key clients and stakeholders.
  • Identify opportunities for additional engineering services and project growth.
  • Represent the organisation at senior-level negotiations, client meetings, industry forums and professional engagements.
  • Provide strategic and technical input during client engagements and business development activities.

2.3 Financial and Project Management

  • Take responsibility for the financial performance of allocated projects, including profitability, budgets, forecasts and cash flow.
  • Manage projects through the full lifecycle, from inception and feasibility through detailed design, construction supervision and final close-out.
  • Manage project scope, programme, budget, resources and deliverables.
  • Allocate resources effectively across projects and project teams.
  • Monitor project performance and implement corrective actions where required.
  • Manage and provide leadership to senior project teams.
  • Ensure projects are delivered within agreed time, cost, quality and performance requirements.

2.4 Mentorship and Stakeholder Engagement

  • Provide professional guidance, technical leadership and mentorship to Candidate Engineers, Technologists and Technicians.
  • Support the professional development of junior personnel towards ECSA registration.
  • Act as a primary technical point of contact for clients, contractors and other key stakeholders.
  • Manage high-level technical communication and stakeholder relationships.
  • Assist in resolving complex technical, commercial and contractual disputes.
  • Promote knowledge sharing and continuous professional development within the engineering team.

2.5 Planning and Design

  • Perform and manage project inception activities during the initial stages of projects.
  • Lead and manage the design and analysis of allocated engineering works.
  • Prepare and oversee the preparation of detailed engineering drawings, specifications and contract documentation.
  • Conduct and manage feasibility studies, site investigations and technical assessments.
  • Prepare and review technical reports and professional deliverables.
  • Ensure designs comply with applicable legislation, regulations, engineering standards, guidelines and specifications.
  • Prepare and manage Bills of Quantities and technical specifications.
  • Manage asset management, master planning, development plans and other related engineering services.

2.6 Project Management

  • Manage project scope, programme, budget and resources effectively.
  • Lead and coordinate multidisciplinary project teams, including engineers, technologists, technicians, drafters and junior staff.
  • Liaise with clients, architects, contractors, government authorities and other stakeholders.
  • Prepare and manage tender documentation.
  • Participate in the evaluation of contractor bids and provide technical recommendations for appointment.
  • Monitor project risks and implement appropriate mitigation measures.
  • Ensure effective project reporting and stakeholder communication.

2.7 Construction Supervision and Contract Administration

  • Provide and manage contract administration services during the construction phase.
  • Manage site supervision and monitor construction activities.
  • Ensure compliance with approved designs, specifications, quality standards, environmental requirements and health and safety requirements.
