Introduction

Our Client is seeking a Senior Back-End Developer to join the core Software Engineering team within their global IT Hub, driving the "Intelligent & Bidirectional Charging" product domain.

This e-mobility platform manages cost-, solar-, and CO₂-optimized charging plans, wallbox IoT connectivity, Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) and Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) power pool use cases, and open energy ecosystem integrations.

In this role, you will design, develop, deploy, and operate production-ready distributed systems and cloud-native applications on AWS, ensuring 24/7 reliability and seamless OpenAPI integrations.

This role is ideal for a seasoned Senior Backend Engineer or Distributed Systems Specialist who excels at architecting resilient cloud-native services in Java or Python on AWS.

It is an excellent match for an engineer who combines deep architectural problem-solving with automated testing rigor, eager to take operational ownership of smart energy platforms and bidirectional vehicle charging ecosystems.

• Polyglot Backend & Distributed Systems: 10+ years of production experience in backend software development using Java (strongly preferred), Python, or JavaScript/TypeScript/Node.js to design and operate scalable distributed architectures.

• Cloud-Native AWS & Container Architecture: Extensive hands-on experience across AWS serverless and compute platforms (Kubernetes, ECS, Lambda, API Gateway, CloudWatch, OpenSearch, RDS, S3).

• Automated Testing, IaC & Delivery: Strong command of automated testing across Unit, Integration, and End-to-End levels, paired with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform preferred) and CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions).

• Location: Midrand / Menlyn / Rosslyn / Home Office Rotation

Duties & Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

• Cloud-Native Backend Development: Design, develop, deploy, and operate production-ready distributed services and APIs for e-mobility and smart charging platforms.

• 24/7 Operations & Reliability: Monitor applications, implement cloud-security patterns, resolve production impediments, and support 24/7 application availability.

• Testing & IaC Automation: Build comprehensive automated unit, integration, and E2E test suites; maintain infrastructure provisioning via Terraform and GitHub Actions.

• Mentorship & Quality Standards: Adhere to code compliance standards, maintain ISO-standard technical documentation, and actively mentor team members within Agile ceremonies.

Location & Relocation

Applicants based outside of Gauteng must be willing to relocate to Midrand/Menlyn/Rosslyn. Please note that relocation to the province will be at the candidate's own cost.

• Relevant IT Degree or equivalent practical experience.

• 10+ years of dedicated production backend development experience in Java, Python, or Node.js.

• Proven track record designing, developing, and operating cloud-native distributed systems on AWS.

• Cloud Certifications (AWS Developer Associate minimum, Professional preferred).

Essential Skills & Technologies

Backend & Architecture

• 10+ years backend development using Java (preferred), Python, or TypeScript/Node.js.

• Microservices architecture, container architecture, and cloud-native application design.

• RESTful API design, implementation, and secure software development practices.

• SQL and NoSQL database management.

Cloud, DevOps & Automation

• AWS Cloud: ECS, EKS/Kubernetes, Lambda, API Gateway, RDS, OpenSearch, CloudWatch, and S3.

• Infrastructure as Code using Terraform (preferred) and automated system deployments.

• CI/CD pipeline design and automation with GitHub Actions.

• Automated testing discipline: Unit Testing, Integration Testing, and End-to-End Testing.

• Monitoring, observability, log analytics, and Git version control workflows.

Advantageous Skills

• Experience with Apache Kafka and Kafka Streams for event-driven architectures.

• Background in linear/nonlinear optimization and algorithm complexity evaluation.

• Deep experience in performance testing, tuning, and system profiling.
