Drive Actuarial Excellence in a High-Performing Insurance Environment

A well-established player within the South African insurance sector is seeking a Short-term Senior Actuarial Analyst to join its growing Actuarial and Analytics function.

This opportunity is suited to a nearly or newly qualified actuary who enjoys combining technical excellence with commercial impact. The successful candidate will play a key role in reserving, financial reporting, regulatory compliance, forecasting, and strategic decision-making, while working alongside a highly skilled actuarial team in a collaborative and data-driven environment. Duties & Responsibilities

The role offers exposure to complex actuarial challenges, advanced reporting frameworks, stakeholder engagement at senior levels, and the opportunity to influence key business decisions through robust actuarial analysis and insight.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the delivery of reserving analyses and reserve reviews for financial and regulatory reporting purposes.
  • Support quarterly and annual reporting cycles by providing actuarial inputs for financial statements and regulatory submissions.
  • Produce reserve movements, claims trend analyses, profitability assessments, and portfolio performance insights.
  • Contribute to business planning, forecasting, and capital management initiatives.
  • Develop and maintain actuarial models used for reserving and financial reporting.
  • Provide meaningful analysis and commentary to support business decision-making and strategic discussions.
  • Engage with internal stakeholders across finance, risk, operations, and executive management.
  • Support interactions with auditors, regulators, and other external stakeholders.
  • Ensure compliance with actuarial governance standards, regulatory requirements, and reporting best practice.
  • Identify opportunities to enhance reporting, reserving methodologies, and process efficiencies.
  • Contribute to data quality improvement initiatives and actuarial data governance activities.
  • Assist with analytics, automation, and reporting enhancement projects aimed at improving business insight and operational efficiency.
  • Support the ongoing development of actuarial systems, tools, and reporting capabilities.

Job Experience and Skills Required

Education

  • Degree in Actuarial Science or another highly quantitative discipline.
  • Nearly Qualified or Newly Qualified Actuary (FASSA, FIA, or equivalent international qualification).

Experience

  • Minimum 4 years' actuarial experience within the short-term insurance industry.
  • Strong exposure to non-life reserving and financial reporting.
  • Experience working within a regulated insurance environment.
  • Exposure to capital modelling, forecasting, financial planning, or solvency reporting would be advantageous.
  • Previous experience mentoring or guiding junior analysts will be beneficial.

Technical Skills

  • Strong actuarial modelling capabilities.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel.
  • Intermediate to Advanced SQL.
  • Power BI or similar reporting and visualisation tools.
  • Exposure to actuarial reserving software will be advantageous.
  • Strong understanding of IFRS 17, solvency frameworks, and actuarial reporting standards.
