Location: Sandton / Midrand
Working Model: Hybrid – 4 days onsite per week in Sandton
Rate: R555 per hour
Contract Start: September/October 2026
Contract End: February 2027
ROLE OVERVIEW
We are looking for an experienced Scrum Master and Agile Coach with strong knowledge of Extreme Programming (XP) practices.
This role goes beyond traditional Scrum facilitation. The successful candidate will serve as a servant-leader and Agile coach for one or more cross-functional software development teams, combining Scrum ceremonies with XP engineering practices to improve delivery, technical quality and team performance.
Duties & Responsibilities
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Scrum Facilitation
- Facilitate sprint planning, daily stand-ups, sprint reviews and retrospectives.
- Remove impediments and protect the team from external disruptions.
- Coach teams on Scrum values, self-organisation and continuous improvement.
- Partner with the Product Owner to maintain a healthy and prioritised backlog.
XP Practice Coaching
- Champion and embed Extreme Programming practices across development teams.
- Coach developers on Test-Driven Development, pair programming, continuous integration, refactoring and collective code ownership.
- Guide teams through short iteration cycles focused on delivering high-quality, working software.
- Promote the development of simple, maintainable and well-tested code.
- Encourage a sustainable delivery pace while balancing deadlines and developer wellbeing.
Agile Coaching and Improvement
- Provide servant leadership and mentorship to cross-functional Agile teams.
- Strengthen the team’s understanding of Scrum, XP principles and effective Agile practices.
- Facilitate continuous feedback between development teams and stakeholders.
- Measure and communicate team velocity, quality metrics and overall delivery health.
- Support conflict resolution and encourage effective collaboration.
Desired Experience & Qualification
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS
- At least 5 years’ experience as a Scrum Master or Agile Coach within software development teams.
- Strong practical knowledge of Scrum and Extreme Programming.
- Proven experience coaching developers on TDD, pair programming and CI/CD practices.
- Knowledge of design patterns, refactoring and unit testing.
- Experience working in short-cycle, iterative software delivery environments.
- Strong facilitation, communication and conflict-resolution skills.
- Expert-level JIRA experience.
- Ability to coach cross-functional teams and promote self-organisation and continuous improvement.
ADVANTAGEOUS
- Certified Scrum Master, PSM I/II or equivalent certification.
- Certified Scrum Developer certification.
- Familiarity with Kanban, SAFe or Scrumban.
- Previous software development experience.
