RENTAL SALES SPECIALIST – DRILLING INSTRUMENTATION Alternative Title: Commercial Account Specialist Location: Gauteng, South Africa preferred Travel: Frequent travel across Sub-Saharan Africa Reporting to: Chief Commercial Officer Employment Type: Individual Contributor Our client is seeking a highly specialised and technically capable Rental Sales Specialist – Drilling Instrumentation to take responsibility for executing defined sales activities and achieving rental revenue and fleet utilisation targets across Sub-Saharan Africa. This is not a general sales position. The successful candidate must bring a strong combination of technical drilling instrumentation knowledge, specialised equipment rental experience, individual sales accountability and proven experience operating across African mining and exploration markets . The successful candidate will independently manage customer relationships, rental opportunities and equipment utilisation across key drilling markets in SADC, West Africa and East Africa . Important: Non-Negotiable Requirements Candidates will only be considered if they meet 100% of the essential technical and experience requirements outlined below. This role requires a candidate with proven, hands-on exposure to drilling instrumentation and specialised equipment rental within the mining, exploration or drilling environment. Key Responsibilities
- Execute defined sales plans and structured customer engagement activities to achieve individual rental revenue and utilisation targets.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with drilling contractors, exploration managers, project geologists, mining operations and procurement teams across Africa.
- Manage a portfolio of specialised drilling instrumentation and drive optimal fleet utilisation across customer and project sites.
- Identify new rental opportunities and proactively secure contract renewals and extensions.
- Manage equipment deployments, off-hires, replacements, breakdowns and turnaround requirements.
- Coordinate the movement of high-value rental equipment across multiple African borders.
- Support the execution of rental agreements, service level agreements, monthly rental structures and standby rates.
- Ensure accurate management of lost, damaged-in-hole and replacement equipment processes.
- Identify on-site drilling challenges and introduce complementary equipment and rental solutions.
- Maintain accurate CRM records, sales activity tracking, fleet utilisation reporting and pipeline visibility.
- Travel extensively to customer sites, including remote mining and exploration locations across Africa.
Duties & Responsibilities
Essential Technical Knowledge Candidates must have a strong operational and technical understanding of driller-operated survey and drilling instrumentation, including:
- North Seeking Gyros , including continuous and multi-shot systems.
- Drill Rig Alignment Systems for surface and underground applications.
- Electronic Multi-Shot (EMS) Tools .
- Core Orientation Tools , including digital and mechanical systems.
Candidates must also understand how these tools are used within
- Diamond Core Drilling
- Reverse Circulation (RC) Drilling
- Directional Drilling
A practical understanding of drilling workflows and the importance of precision instrumentation in reducing exploration downtime is essential. Experience Requirements To be considered, candidates must demonstrate:
- 5–8+ years of dedicated B2B sales, account management or commercial experience within mining supply, drilling services or specialised industrial equipment rental.
- Proven experience carrying and achieving individual sales, revenue or utilisation targets .
- Experience working independently without relying on a sales team or direct reports to achieve targets.
- A demonstrated understanding of the equipment rental lifecycle , including asset availability, fleet allocation, equipment turnaround, replacements and damaged or lost equipment.
- Experience managing physical rental assets across multiple African countries and borders .
- Proven exposure to mining and exploration markets within regions such as SADC, West Africa and/or East Africa .
- An established network of relevant industry contacts, including drilling contractors, exploration managers, geologists and mining procurement professionals.
Commercial and Operational Skills The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate experience in:
- Driving fleet utilisation and rental revenue.
- Managing specialised equipment rental contracts.
- Working with monthly rental rates, standby rates and service level agreements.
- Coordinating complex cross-border logistics.
- Understanding temporary import and export requirements for high-value technical equipment.
- Managing customer expectations during equipment failures and replacement situations.
- Identifying opportunities to upsell complementary drilling instrumentation and rental solutions.
- Maintaining disciplined CRM, pipeline and fleet utilisation reporting.
Qualifications A tertiary qualification in one of the following areas would be highly advantageous: Geology, Mining/Mechanical Engineering, or a Technical Trade. Candidates with a qualification in commercial , logistics or a related field will also be considered where supported by substantial hands-on technical experience within drilling, mining or specialised equipment rental.
