Product Development Engineer (PDE) Distribution and Transmission Hardware - PMB

Introduction

Our client is a proudly African company with a global presence, manufacturing  products for energy transmission and distribution networks. The head office and manufacturing operations are situated in Pietermaritzburg. They are looking for a Product Development Engineer to join the team. The purpose of the role is the development of products and manufacturing processes in line with the overall company strategic objectives, specifically on composite insulators. The position reports directly to the PDE Manager.

Duties & Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

Product Development (responsible)

• Cost and time management of all related projects

• Prototype design, technical qualification and testing

• Manufacturing process design and implementation - Distribution and Transmission Hardware

Products, inclusive of the following (not exhaustive);

• Substation Clamps, wireform and vibration damping products

• Small hardware components forming part of a different value stream (e.g. fuse cut out

components), only production implementation.

• Continuous Improvement of products and manufacturing processes i.r.t. design.

• Technical specification and direct engagement with potential suppliers of new materials,

components or products until project completion or supplier qualification.

• Issuance of manufacturing drawings to relevant stakeholders to ensure correctness of design

revision.

Quality Management (support)

• Assist the Quality department in the reduction of production waste in the hardware

manufacturing departments.

• Provide guidance to the receipt inspection team on all related incoming materials to be used on

related products.

• Lead, report and closeout all engineering related non-conformance investigations related to

the specific product line.

Sales and Marketing (support)

• Assist in the compilation of tenders and other customer enquiries by completing all technical

submissions on distribution and transmission hardware product lines and

• Address and close out all technical product-related customer complaints.

Knowledge

Introduction to ISO 9001;

Basic understanding of the Engineering Professions Act

• Basic understanding of South African Labour Laws, as amended

• Risk Management

Work Systems

• Computer Aided Design and Draughting (CADD) – Intermediate;

• Finite Element Analysis (FEA) – Intermediate to Advanced ;

• MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint): Medium to Advanced Level;

• SHEQX: Intermediate to Advanced Level – an added advantage. Must have background on

non-conformance management software; and

• ERP (SYSPRO): basic level understanding of any ERP system

Desired Experience & Qualification

Minimum Qualifications

• Grade 12 or equivalent;

• Bachelor's Degree in Electrical/Mechanical Engineering, preferably BSc (Eng)

• Professional registration with ECSA is a prerequisite

Experience Required

A minimum of 5 years of product development experience in a manufacturing environment

Experience in the development of line hardware essential.

Experience in the electrical power transmission and distribution industry a distinct advantage.
