Duties & Responsibilities

Job Purpose

A "Product Category Specialist Engineer" is a technical expert  who deeply understands the surge suppression product category, utilizing their engineering knowledge to analyse performance, overseeing the lifecycle of surge protection products, identify improvement opportunities, collaborate with the Engineering Manager on new product development, ensure the category meets market needs and technical specifications, providing advanced technical support and overseeing the manufacturing process.

This role requires close collaboration with sales, marketing and product management teams to optimize product strategy within that category and to take the lead on technical presentations both locally and internationally.

Key Responsibilities

1.  Technical Expertise

Possess in-depth technical knowledge of the product category, including design principles, materials, manufacturing processes, and performance metrics.

2.  Market Analysis

Monitor market trends, competitor activity, and customer feedback to identify potential product improvements and new product development opportunities within the category.

3.  Product Development

Collaborate with engineering teams to design, develop, and test new products within the category, ensuring they meet technical requirements and market expectations.

4.  Product Optimization

Analyse existing product performance data to identify areas for improvement, such as cost reduction, efficiency enhancements, or feature upgrades.

5.  Technical Support

Provide technical expertise to sales teams, addressing customer inquiries and resolving technical issues related to the product category.

6.  Competitive Analysis

Evaluate competitor products within the category to identify strengths and weaknesses, informing product strategy development.

7.  Product Launch Support

Assist in the launch of new products within the category, including training sales teams and developing marketing materials.

8.  Cost Management

Work with engineering and manufacturing teams to optimize product costs while maintaining quality standards.

Desired Experience & Qualification

• Degree / NH Diploma / National Diploma / N6 Electrical Engineering Heavy Current or equivalent in an appropriate field of study or equivalent work.

• Minimum 3 years (with Degree) and 5 to 10 years’ (other).

• SHERQ awareness training.

• Product Development

• CAD / MATLAB / ETAP PS / PSCAD.

Main Skills

• Advanced understanding and interpretation of MV/HV schematic drawings.

• Understanding of the principles of design and development engineering.

• Good understanding of Insulation Co-ordination / Surge Suppression / Switchgear fundamentals / Power System Engineering.

• Computer proficiency (Microsoft, custom test applications).

• Must be acquainted with the use of tools and equipment necessary to conduct testing of products (such as oscilloscope, multi-meter etc.), safety power connections and use of sophisticated equipment.

• Have analytical & diagnostic skills.

• Have good communication skills.

• Attention to detail.

• Must be proactive.
