Hulamin is looking for a suitably qualified and experienced Process Engineer to join the CD Remelt department. This position is based in Hulamin Pietermaritzburg.

Duties & Responsibilities

Purpose of the Role

To assume responsibility for process performance within the CD Remelt area by establishing, entrenching and improving process control standards, leading improvement and process projects, and driving data-led analysis of quality attributes to reduce melt loss and improve overall departmental performance.

The core competencies for this position include

  • Assume responsibility for the process performance within the CD Remelt Area.
  • Lead improvement and process projects.
  • Manage the Quality Information System.
  • Data analysis, trending and monitoring of all quality attributes to assist in melt loss reduction.
  • Establish, update and entrench process control standards and controlled documents within the department.
  • Review furnace output and resolve constraints by conducting trend analysis and engaging different teams.
  • Assist with the development, training and entrenching of best practices.
  • Provide technical support and assistance to improve overall performance (production related delays).
  • Provide support to the production areas through metallographic analysis of in-process metal defects and participate in problem solving task teams across the plant.
  • Develop skills and expert usage of the metal testing equipment and procedures such as PODFA, LIMCA, SEM, etc.

Desired Experience & Qualification

The core requirements for this position include

  • BSc Engineering (Metallurgical).
  • At least 5 years experience in a manufacturing environment is essential.
  • A good understanding and experience of metallurgical processes associated with casting.
  • Six Sigma qualification is advantageous.
  • Experience in an analytical language (e.g. Python, R, Julia).
  • Knowledge and track record of Project Management methodologies.
  • Practical experience using Process Control methodologies.
  • A proven quantitative and fact-based approach to fault finding and troubleshooting.

  • Knowledge of manufacturing principles and economics of manufacturing.
  • Equipment capability, maintenance knowledge, and experience.
  • Project management and engineering skills.
  • The ability to research, initiate and lead own projects.
  • Proven experience in driving Overall Equipment Effectiveness.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of the product development and casting model.
  • Proven capability to manage recoveries.
  • Management of the Quality Information System.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Proficiency in using Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Access at an advanced level.
  • Good leadership, organisation and team building skills.

Key Success Measures (KPIs)

  • Melt loss reduction.
  • Furnace output and resolution of process constraints.
  • Compliance to process control standards and controlled documents.
  • Quality Information System data integrity and closure of quality deviations.
