The Proactive Monitoring Engineer is responsible for proactively monitoring strategic customer services and network infrastructure, with a primary focus on RF microwave, wireless backhaul, fibre and IP networks. The role identifies service degradation before it affects customers, conducts first-line investigations and network testing, and escalates faults with complete and accurate technical information. The incumbent will also support the SOC desk during periods of operational demand to help restore services within agreed service-level agreements (SLAs).
Duties & Responsibilities
- Continuously monitor strategic customer services and network infrastructure.
- Proactively identify outages, RF link degradation, latency, packet loss and other performance issues.
- Perform first-line investigations, diagnostics and network testing to validate faults.
- Interpret monitoring graphs, alarms, network diagrams and performance trends.
- Escalate incidents to the appropriate engineering teams with complete diagnostics and supporting information.
- Support incident logging, customer updates and queue management when required.
- Assist with major-incident response, technical coordination and service restoration.
- Maintain accurate incident records, monitoring documentation and shift handover information.
- Identify recurring faults and recommend proactive improvements to reduce repeat incidents.
- Deliver a high standard of customer service while meeting agreed SLA commitments
Desired Experience & Qualification
- Early detection and accurate validation of service-impacting events.
- Quality, completeness, and timeliness of incident escalations.
- Compliance with incident-management processes, SLAs, and customer update requirements.
- Accuracy of incident records, monitoring documentation, and shift handovers.
- Contribution to reducing recurring incidents and improving service availability.
- Matric / Grade 12.
- CompTIA A+ and Network+ certifications (required).
- ITIL Foundation v3.
- CCNA certification or equivalent networking knowledge (advantageous).
- Two to three years’ experience in a NOC, SOC or ISP environment.
- Experience supporting RF microwave, wireless backhaul, fibre and IP networks.
- Working knowledge of TCP/IP networking and network-monitoring tools.
- Ability to analyse monitoring graphs and interpret network diagrams.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
