The principal design engineer is a full-time, on-site role based in Durban. This role leads the design and development of automotive components and bullbars, from concept through to production release. Day-to-day tasks include creating and reviewing detailed designs, overseeing CAD models and engineering drawings, performing mechanical design calculations, and ensuring designs meet safety, performance, and regulatory requirements. The Principal Design Engineer collaborates with production, quality, and procurement teams, supports prototype builds and testing, resolves design issues on the shop floor, and drives continuous improvement in product design and engineering processes. The role also involves mentoring junior engineers and contributing to long-term product and technology strategy.
Qualifications
Strong background in Design Engineering and product design, with the ability to lead complex component and assembly designs
Proficiency in Mechanical Engineering and Computer-Aided Design (CAD) tools for modelling, drafting, and analysis
Experience in automotive or heavy industrial manufacturing environments, especially in structural or safety-related products
Bachelor’s degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering, Design Engineering, or a closely related discipline
Ability to interpret standards and regulations, perform tolerance and stress analyses, and validate designs through testing
Strong problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills, with experience leading cross-functional projects
Demonstrated capability to mentor and guide engineering teams, manage multiple projects, and meet deadlines
