Principal Civil Engineer

Our client is seeking an experienced and professionally registered Civil Engineer to join their Cape Town team at Principal level. This opportunity is suited to a technically strong engineering professional with extensive consulting experience in municipal infrastructure and building-related civil engineering, coupled with proven project leadership and client management capabilities.

Minimum Requirements

• Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering from a recognised institution.
• Professional Engineer (Pr Eng) registration with ECSA.
• Typically 8+ years of relevant consulting engineering experience.
• Proven experience in civil infrastructure design and delivery for building developments and municipal engineering projects.
• Strong technical knowledge of roads, access infrastructure, bulk earthworks, platform design, stormwater, sewer, wastewater, potable water, and fire water systems.
• Experience with municipal services and external infrastructure connections.
• Strong understanding of South African engineering standards, municipal requirements, and relevant design codes.
• Proficiency in Civil 3D and an understanding of BIM-enabled design and multidisciplinary coordination.
• Experience preparing and reviewing engineering calculations, drawings, reports, specifications, tender documentation, and construction information.
• Ability to undertake technical reviews and design sign-off where required.
• Excellent communication, leadership, and stakeholder management skills.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the design and delivery of civil engineering and municipal infrastructure projects.
• Manage designs from feasibility and concept development through detailed design, tender, and construction stages.
• Provide technical leadership and mentorship to engineers, technologists, and BIM/CAD personnel.
• Coordinate civil designs and models with architects, structural engineers, MEP teams, and other consultants.
• Conduct technical reviews, design verification, and quality assurance.
• Manage project deliverables, budgets, programmes, and technical resources.
• Support tender submissions, fee proposals, and business development initiatives.
• Provide construction-stage technical support, respond to requests for information, and conduct site inspections when required.
• Liaise with clients, municipal authorities, and other stakeholders to facilitate project approvals and successful delivery.

Advantageous Experience

• Experience in structural design.
• Previous involvement in projects requiring City of Cape Town approvals.
• Experience operating at Principal or Associate level within a consulting engineering environment.
