- The purpose of the Operations Shift Manager is to oversee and coordinate Transport operations during assigned shifts. This role is critical in ensuring the efficient dispatch, fleet control, and seamless communication across operations.
What you'll do
- Manage and oversee all transport operations during your assigned shift.
- Dispatch loads according to plan, ensuring the correct allocation of drivers and vehicles.
- Coordinate operational changes resulting from absenteeism, vehicle breakdowns, split loads, or additional transport requirements.
- Monitor fleet movements and support operations to ensure vehicles return according to schedule.
- Communicate operational issues and outstanding queries during shift handovers.
- Manage and lead shift employees on a day-to-day basis.
- Report, coordinate, and follow up on vehicle breakdowns with relevant stakeholders.
- Control and manage toll cards, attendance registers, and related administrative records.
- Manage discipline and performance matters in line with company policies and procedures.
- Provide operational support across the business when required.
What you bring
Essential
- Grade 12 / Matric or equivalent qualification.
- Working knowledge of a transport, logistics, or fleet operations environment.
- Experience coordinating operational activities within a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, email, and relevant transport management systems.
- Strong planning, organising, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to make sound decisions under pressure.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to manage and motivate teams effectively.
- Proven ability to maintain accuracy while handling multiple priorities.
- Own reliable transport.
- Willingness to work shifts, including weekends, public holidays, and night shifts.
Advantageous
- Studying towards or completed a qualification in Road Transport, Logistics, Supply Chain, or a related field.
- Previous supervisory or people management experience.
- Experience working with TNT, Mix Telematics, or similar transport management systems.
- Understanding of fleet scheduling, route planning, and dispatch operations.
- Knowledge of labour relations and disciplinary processes within an operational environment.
