Our client, an upmarket hotel and conference center in Pretoria is looking for a Multi-Skilled Worker to join their dynamic team
Duties & Responsibilities
JOB DESCRIPTION / PURPOSE
To ensure the effective, safe and timeous maintenance, repair and improvement of all buildings, plant, equipment and facilities in order to support a consistently upmarket guest experience and uninterrupted hotel operations. This includes to provide multi-skilled maintenance services (electrical, plumbing, carpentry, painting, tiling and general repairs) across all buildings, guest areas, back-of-house and grounds; to execute planned preventative maintenance and reactive maintenance in line with standards set by the Facilities Manager and statutory requirements; and to support guest satisfaction by responding promptly and professionally to maintenance requests and minimising downtime of facilities and equipment.
- Ensure day-to-day maintenance of all buildings, facilities and equipment on the property, including accommodation, conference venues, spa, kitchens and public areas.
- Complete preventative maintenance tasks and schedules as set out by the Facilities Manager to reduce unplanned breakdowns and extend asset life.
- Respond promptly and efficiently to work orders and maintenance requests from the Facilities Manager, supervisors, other departments and guests.
- Maintain all maintenance records, work order documentation and related paperwork accurately and timeously.
- Inspect facilities and equipment regularly to identify, report and rectify maintenance needs proactively.
- Ensure that all work is performed safely, in accordance with company policies, Occupational Health and Safety requirements and hotel standards.
- Collaborate with other maintenance staff and departments to support smooth hotel operations and special projects.
MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
General Maintenance and Repairs
- Perform day-to-day general maintenance and repair tasks throughout the property as allocated by the Facilities Manager or supervisor.
- Complete all repair work in a timely manner to minimise downtime, ensuring that the quality of workmanship meets hotel and brand standards.
- Perform work that may fall outside the core trade, provided it is within reasonable general maintenance scope (multi-skilled approach).
Preventative Maintenance
- Complete preventative maintenance tasks and schedules on buildings, equipment and plant, as directed by the Facilities Manager.
- Continuously check and inspect buildings and facilities, including guest rooms, public areas, spa, kitchens and back-of-house, to identify and report maintenance needs.
- Conduct daily checks on critical areas such as the spa facilities and ensure all are fully functional and safe for guest use.
Electrical and Mechanical Tasks
- Perform visual checks of electrical distribution boards to ensure no loose wiring or obvious defects; report and assist with rectification in line with competency and safety limits.
- Install and repair equipment and fittings such as light fittings and plug points, ensuring safe isolation and reconnection practices.
- Check and monitor operation of equipment such as air-conditioning units, standby pumps, sump pumps, water plant and similar mechanical installations.
Plumbing and Water Systems
- Check and maintain all hot and cold-water systems, including geysers, valves and visible pipework, as allocated.
- Check and repair fittings in toilets, taps, basins, toilets, urinals and related sanitary ware.
- Respond to leaks, blockages and low-pressure problems promptly to ensure guest comfort and prevent property damage.
Carpentry, Tiling, Painting and Finishes
- Carry out installation and repairs of tile work, including floor and wall tiles, grouting and minor waterproofing in wet areas.
- Sand, prepare and varnish wood surfaces such as doors, frames, furniture and external timber features.
- Sand, prepare and paint walls and ceilings to a high standard of finish, matching existing colours and textures where reasonably possible.
- Install and repair fittings and fixtures (e.g. cornices, skirting, shelving, curtain rails) as required.
Inspections, Housekeeping and Safety
- Perform routine visual inspections of plant areas, equipment rooms and service yards to identify hazards, defects and maintenance needs.
- Ensure that the work area is kept neat, tidy and safe at all times, taking special care not to damage carpets, finishes or guest property.
- Follow all safety rules and procedures, and operate tools and equipment in accordance with established safety policies and departmental procedures.
- Comply with company regulations, policies and standard operating procedures, including Health and Safety, environmental and security requirements.
Documentation and Communication
- Complete work order records, checklists and any related maintenance paperwork accurately and file as required.
- Report completed tasks, outstanding issues and material or spares requirements to the Facilities Manager or supervisor.
- Communicate effectively with other departments regarding the status of maintenance tasks, access to rooms or areas, and any disruption to operations.
Guest and Departmental Support
- Respond promptly and efficiently to guest maintenance requirements, ensuring professional interaction and minimal disruption to the guest experience.
- Assist other staff and departments as required with maintenance-related support, including during functions, conferences and high-occupancy periods.
- Work all shifts flexibly, including long hours, night shifts, weekends and public holidays, in line with operational requirements.
Desired Experience & Qualification
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
- National Senior Certificate (Matric) or equivalent (Essential).
- A relevant trade test, apprenticeship, or technical certificate (e.g. electrical, plumbing, fitting and turning, building, carpentry) is desirable and will be an advantage.
- Additional short courses in Health and Safety, basic electrical work, plumbing or general maintenance will be advantageous.
EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED
- Minimum 3 - 5 years' general maintenance, handyman or building services experience in a hotel, lodge, resort or similar environment is essential.
- Proven track record of multi-skilled work across at least two of the following: plumbing, basic electrical, carpentry, tiling, painting, mechanical plant support.
- Driver's License + own transport (essential)
- Experience working in a guest-facing or service-oriented environment, with exposure to high service standards, will be an advantage.
- Good understanding of hotel or hospitality maintenance operations and standards.
- Demonstrated knowledge and practical experience in general maintenance and handyman duties in a hospitality or similar environment.
- Basic knowledge of electrical systems, distribution boards and safe isolation principles, within the scope of a maintenance handyman.
- Knowledge of plumbing systems, sanitary fittings and hot/cold-water reticulation in commercial buildings.
- Understanding of carpentry, painting, tiling and finishing techniques suitable for an upmarket hotel environment.
- Familiarity with Occupational Health and Safety requirements relevant to maintenance work (including safe use of ladders, power tools and personal protective equipment).
- Practical skills in plumbing, electrical (basic), carpentry, painting and tiling; skim plaster and cornice work highly desirable.
- Ability to work confidently with power tools (drills, grinders, sanders, cutters, etc.) in a safe and controlled manner.
- Strong fault-finding and problem-solving skills in relation to building, equipment and plant issues.
- Ability to interpret basic technical drawings, layouts and equipment manuals.
- Effective time management, planning and prioritization skills to handle multiple tasks and deadlines.
