Medical Specialist Grade 1 – 3 Obstetrics & Gynaecology

Requirements

• Senior Certificate Grade 12 or equivalent. MBChB/MBBCh or equivalent medical qualification and MMed Obstetrics and Gynaecology and /or admission with fellowship college of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, with current registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa HPCSA as a Medical Specialist in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
• Grade 1: Registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Specialist in Obstetrics and Gynaecology; no post-registration specialist experience required.
• Grade 2: A minimum of five 5 years appropriate experience after registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Specialist in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
• Grade 3: A minimum of ten 10 years appropriate experience after registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Specialist in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. The candidate must demonstrate sound specialist knowledge and clinical competence across Obstetrics and Gynaecology, including the management of high-risk pregnancies, obstetric emergencies, complicated deliveries, gynaecological emergencies and common gynaecological conditions.
• Sound operative and surgical skills are required. Competency or experience in colposcopy and minimally invasive gynaecological surgery will be an added advantage. Knowledge of clinical governance, patient safety, quality improvement, maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality review processes, clinical audit and medico-legal risk management is required. Knowledge of relevant healthcare legislation, policies, clinical guidelines and Public Service prescripts is essential.
• The candidate must demonstrate leadership, supervisory, teaching, communication, problem-solving and multidisciplinary teamwork skills. Computer literacy with proficiency in Microsoft Office applications is required.
• Inherent requirement of the post: Participation in the hospital's after-hours call system is compulsory, including participation in Commuted Overtime in accordance with applicable policies and prescripts

Duties

• Provide comprehensive specialist Obstetrics and Gynaecology services, including inpatient, outpatient, emergency, theatre and after-hours clinical services. Assess and manage complicated obstetric and gynaecological cases and provide senior specialist consultation and clinical decision-making for high-risk and critically ill patients. Provide specialist oversight of labour ward, maternity, antenatal, gynaecology, theatre and relevant outpatient services.
• Ensure timely specialist review and escalation of high-risk patients and promote safe, evidence-based and patient-centred clinical practice. Perform and supervise appropriate obstetric and gynaecological surgical procedures within the specialist's scope of practice and competence. Promote safe surgical practice and appropriate peri-operative management and contribute towards the development of specialised services, including colposcopy and minimally invasive gynaecological surgery, where appropriate.
• Provide clinical leadership, supervision and mentorship to Medical Officers, Registrars, Interns, Community Service Medical Officers and other members of the multidisciplinary team. Participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, bedside training, clinical meetings and continuing professional development activities.
• Participate actively in clinical governance and patient safety, including maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality reviews, near-miss reviews, clinical audits, adverse-event investigations and implementation of quality-improvement interventions. Identify clinical risks and implement corrective measures to improve maternal, neonatal and gynaecological outcomes.
• Contribute to the prevention and reduction of medico-legal risk through appropriate specialist oversight, timely escalation of care, adherence to evidence-based clinical guidelines, effective communication, comprehensive clinical documentation and review of adverse clinical outcomes.
• Develop, review and implement departmental clinical protocols, standard operating procedures and referral pathways in accordance with national, provincial and institutional guidelines. Monitor compliance with applicable norms and standards and contribute to institutional readiness for regulatory and quality-assurance assessments.
• Support the Head of Department in the planning, organisation, monitoring and evaluation of Obstetrics and Gynaecology services. Participate in departmental operational planning, performance monitoring, service improvement initiatives and relevant hospital clinical governance and management structures.
• Promote appropriate and cost-effective utilisation of medicines, blood products, laboratory investigations, diagnostic imaging, theatre resources, medical equipment and other departmental resources.
• Contribute to demand planning and identification of equipment and resource requirements for the department. Participate in the monitoring and analysis of departmental clinical indicators, including maternal and perinatal outcomes, obstetric complications, Caesarean section trends, adverse events and other relevant performance indicators.
• Use clinical data to identify service gaps and implement appropriate quality-improvement interventions. Strengthen continuity of care and referral pathways between Pholosong Regional Hospital, referring clinics, district services and relevant tertiary institutions. Provide specialist advice and support to referring healthcare professionals where appropriate.
• Participate in departmental research, clinical audits, evidence-based practice and continuous professional development. Maintain professional competence and remain abreast of developments in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
• Participate fully in the hospital's after-hours specialist service and Commuted Overtime roster and provide specialist support for obstetric and gynaecological emergencies. Perform other reasonable clinical, academic, governance and administrative duties delegated by the Head of Department, Clinical Manager or Hospital Management.
