Medical Officer Grade 1 - Radiology

Requirements

• Senior Certificate Grade 12 or equivalent. MBChB/MBBCh degree or equivalent medical qualification that permits registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa HPCSA.
• Current registration with the HPCSA as an independent Medical Practitioner and proof of current annual registration are compulsory. Appropriate clinical experience as a Medical Officer is required.
• Previous experience or demonstrated exposure in a Radiology/Diagnostic Imaging Department will be an added advantage. Previous Registrar training or Registrar-level exposure in Radiology will be an added advantage.
• Completion of relevant Radiology primary examinations will also be an added advantage. The candidate should have an interest in Diagnostic Radiology and demonstrate sound clinical knowledge, appropriate clinical judgement, good communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary environment.
• Knowledge of radiation safety, patient safety, clinical governance and applicable healthcare legislation and policies will be advantageous. Computer literacy, including proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, is required.
• Familiarity with digital radiology systems, including PACS/RIS, where applicable, will be an added advantage. Inherent requirement of the post: Participation in the hospital's after-hours call system is compulsory, including participation in Commuted Overtime in accordance with applicable policies and prescripts

Duties

• Provide Medical Officer services within the Radiology Department under appropriate specialist supervision and in accordance with the incumbent's level of competence and scope of practice. Assess patients referred for diagnostic imaging, review relevant clinical information and investigations, and contribute to determining the most appropriate imaging examination in consultation with referring clinicians and supervising specialists.
• Participate in the interpretation and reporting of diagnostic imaging examinations within the Medical Officer's demonstrated level of competence and under appropriate specialist oversight. This may include plain radiography, ultrasound, computed tomography CT and other imaging modalities available within the institution.
• Perform and/or assist with appropriate radiological procedures within the incumbent's level of training, competence and scope of practice. Ensure appropriate patient preparation, informed consent where required, and safe clinical management before, during and after procedures.
• Participate in the provision of emergency and after-hours radiology services, including the assessment and prioritisation of urgent imaging requests and appropriate escalation of complex or critical findings.
• Promote the safe, appropriate and cost-effective utilisation of diagnostic imaging services. Liaise with referring clinicians regarding imaging indications, appropriate investigations and significant or urgent radiological findings. Work collaboratively with Radiologists, Radiographers, Nurses, clinicians and other members of the multidisciplinary team to ensure safe, efficient and patient-centred radiology services.
• Participate in departmental clinical governance and quality-improvement activities, including clinical audits, morbidity and mortality meetings, adverse-event and near-miss reviews, radiation safety activities and implementation of corrective measures.
• Ensure compliance with applicable radiation protection requirements, departmental protocols, standard operating procedures, patient safety standards, infection prevention and control measures and relevant regulatory requirements. Maintain accurate and comprehensive clinical and radiological records and ensure that reports, requests and other relevant documentation are completed accurately and timeously.
• Participate in multidisciplinary clinical meetings and contribute radiological input to patient management where appropriate. Participate in departmental teaching, academic activities, continuing professional development, clinical audits and research. Maintain and progressively develop knowledge and competencies in Diagnostic Radiology through supervised clinical exposure and self-directed learning.
• Contribute to effective patient flow and turnaround times within the Radiology Department and assist in identifying and addressing operational challenges affecting imaging services. Participate in the responsible utilisation and safeguarding of radiological equipment and other departmental resources and promptly report equipment, patient safety or service-delivery risks through the appropriate channels.
• Participate in the departmental after-hours service and Commuted Overtime roster as determined by operational requirements. Perform other reasonable clinical, administrative, academic and governance duties delegated by the Head of Radiology, Clinical Manager or Hospital Management
