Start free — we apply for you →Job Title: Medical Laboratory Technician (12 Month Fixed Term Contract - Wits Health Consortium) Start Date: 2026-07-28 - 2026-08-10 Vacancy Type: Fixed Term Contractor JHB003972 Sectors: Medical Healthcare Location: Gauteng , Sandringham Salary: (Market related, Negotiable) Brief: available immediately|certificate|contract|data management|deadline driven|diploma|fixed term|gauteng|gclp|gcp|laboratory technician|medical laboratory technician|medical technician|ngo|npo|organization skills|sandringham|sop|unemployed Background: Wits Health Consortium (Pty) Limited ("WHC") is a wholly-owned Company of the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg (South Africa) under its Faculty of Health Sciences WHC provides Faculty with a legal framework within which to operate the research and other activities necessary to support its academic objectives In addition, WHC offers a range of products and services to Academics Detail: Division: HIV Sero Molecular Main purpose of the job: Support laboratory activities for studies at the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) Coordinate the receipt, registration, processing and storage of clinical specimens Perform laboratory procedures Ensure accurate labelling, documentation and data capture in line with study protocols and laboratory standards Maintain high quality laboratory practices while ensuring timely processing of samples to support study timelines and address existing laboratory backlogs Location: 1 Modderfontein Road, Sandringham, Johannesburg Key performance areas: Apply quality control to verify that samples and requisition forms match Process, aliquoting and storage of biological samples as per study-specific standard operating procedures (SOPs) Capture data accurately in LIMS and other data/result systems Label and store samples in designated freezer locations Maintain accurate sample tracking for retrieval Prepare samples for destruction according to study requirements Work in -20/-86 degrees freezers Coordinate receipt of samples from study sites Real-time receipt and processing of samples delivered Accurate documentation of sample receipt, processing and storage Liaise with couriers and study sites to ensure timely delivery Process specimens as per study protocol Carry out test procedures as per department requirements Complete all required documentation for shipment receipt and processing Ensure correct application of all policies and procedures in compliance with transport and repository requirements Maintain cleanliness and organization of laboratory and storage areas Monitor freezer performance and respond to alarms Ensure equipment is functioning and log sheets are completed Carry out equipment maintenance as per SOP Complete equipment maintenance charts as per SOP Maintaining organized laboratory records and documentation File worksheets Perform routine quality control checks on samples and systems Respond to data queries Support updates and implementation of SOPs Required minimum education and training: Medical Technician Certification/Qualification Professional Body Registration: HPCSA Registration as a Medical Laboratory Technician Required minimum work experience: 2 years Laboratory experience as a Medical Laboratory Technician Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities: Experience working in a laboratory environment with at least 2 years of experience, and preferably virology/microbiology laboratory Experience working in an HIV serology or molecular laboratory Experience with specimen processing, storage, sample tracking and laboratory information systems LIMS laboratory information system experience Experience with high quality data capturing and data management.
