National Glass is one of South Africa's leading glass wholesalers and manufacturers, supplying the aluminium, glazing and construction industries nationwide. As we continue to invest in automation and advanced manufacturing technologies, we are looking for an innovative Mechatronics Engineer to help shape the future of our business.
About the Role
This is far more than a traditional engineering role.
We're looking for someone who is excited by emerging technologies and enjoys solving problems that don't yet have off-the-shelf solutions. You will work at the intersection of mechanical engineering, electronics, automation and software to design, build and implement systems that improve the way we manufacture, move and manage products.
You won't simply maintain existing equipment—you'll help create the next generation of manufacturing solutions. From intelligent automation and robotics to machine vision, smart factories and advanced manufacturing technologies, you'll have the opportunity to experiment, prototype and bring new ideas to life.
You must be comfortable spending time on the factory floor as well as travelling between our operations. This is a hands-on role, not a desk-based engineering position.
If you enjoy asking, "There has to be a better way," this role is for you.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Design, develop and implement innovative automation solutions.
- Research, evaluate and introduce emerging technologies that improve manufacturing and business performance.
- Develop intelligent systems using automation, sensors and robotics.
- Improve manufacturing efficiency through automation and advanced control systems.
- Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical and control system faults.
- Optimise CNC machinery and automated production equipment.
- Lead research, development and implementation of new engineering concepts.
- Design and prototype solutions to problems where no existing solution exists.
- Analyse production data to identify opportunities for automation and process improvement.
- Lead engineering projects from concept through design, testing and implementation.
- Collaborate with Operations, IT, Production and Maintenance teams to develop smarter ways of working.
- Ensure engineering solutions comply with safety and quality standards
Desired Experience & Qualification
Minimum Requirements
- BEng or BSc in Mechatronic Engineering.
- 3–8 years' experience in manufacturing, automation or industrial engineering.
- Strong understanding of mechanical, electrical and electronic systems.
- Experience with PLCs, sensors, drives and automated equipment.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving and fault-finding skills.
- Strong project management and organisational skills.
- Proficient in Microsoft Excel and engineering software.
- Valid driver's licence.
Personal Attributes
We are looking for someone who is
- Naturally curious and driven to understand how things work.
- Passionate about technology, innovation and continuous learning.
- Creative and able to think beyond conventional engineering solutions.
- Comfortable experimenting, prototyping and testing new ideas.
- Analytical and highly detail-oriented.
- Hands-on with a practical approach to problem-solving.
- Calm under pressure and resilient when tackling complex challenges.
- An excellent communicator who enjoys collaborating across different disciplines.
Package & Remuneration
We believe in paying for value. We invite you to tell us what you want to earn. If you can fund your number and contribute meaningfully to the business, the conversation around remuneration becomes straightforward.
