Job Purpose Designing, developing, and optimising welding processes, procedures, and systems to ensure structural integrity, compliance, and production efficiency in a manufacturing environment. Develops and maintains Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) and ensures adherence to standards such as ASME, EN, and ISO 3834. It integrates mechanical engineering expertise to evaluate and improve machine performance, reliability, and equipment suitability. Also oversees quality control systems, weld inspection processes, and compliance assurance in collaboration with production and QC teams. In addition, it drives the implementation of advanced welding technologies, including weld map development and process digitalisation. Overall, the position ensures safe, reliable, and cost-effective manufacturing through continuous improvement and engineering excellence Key Performance Areas Job Requirements 1. Welding Engineering & Fabrication. • Develop, qualify, and maintain welding procedures (WPS/PQR) in accordance with standards (ISO, AWS, ASME where applicable) • Define welding parameters for MIG, TIG, MMA, SAW, and automated welding systems • Ensure weld quality compliance through NDT coordination (UT, RT, MT, PT) • Troubleshoot welding defects (porosity, cracking, distortion, lack of fusion) • Support fabrication processes including jigs, fixtures, and assembly methods 2. Mechanical Engineering & Machine Performance • Evaluate and optimize machine performance and utilisation across welding, machining, and fabrication equipment • Conduct root cause analysis (RCA) on equipment failures and production downtime • Improve Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) through engineering interventions • Analyse machine capability, cycle times, and bottlenecks Support installation, commissioning, and validation of new machinery 3. Equipment Reliability & Maintenance Engineering Support . • Work closely with maintenance teams on preventive and predictive maintenance strategies • Perform failure mode analysis (FMEA / RCM principles) on critical equipment • Improve equipment reliability through engineering redesigns and upgrades • Evaluate spare parts criticality and lifecycle performance Reduce unplanned downtime through structured reliability programs 4. Technical Evaluation of Machines & Equipment • Assess and approve new equipment specifications and procurement technical evaluations • Conduct machine capability assessments and benchmarking • Evaluate supplier technical proposals for welding, machining, and fabrication equipment • Verify installation compliance and acceptance testing (SAT/FAT) Ensure machines meet safety, productivity, and quality requirements 5. Continuous Improvement & Manufacturing Excellence • Lead Lean Manufacturing and Kaizen initiatives • Drive cost reduction projects (material, consumables, energy, downtime) • Improve welding cycle times and machining efficiency • Implement standardised work and process optimisation • Support digitalisation initiatives (data collection, machine monitoring) 6. Quality Assurance & Compliance • Ensure compliance with ISO 3834, ISO 9001, ASME, AWS codes (as applicable) • Support internal and external audits • Manage welding traceability and documentation systems • Work closely with QC engineers on inspection standards and approvals 7. Cross-Functional Collaboration • Work with Planning, Production, Maintenance, Quality, and Engineering teams • Provide technical training and mentorship to welding and machine operators • Support project engineering during new product introduction (NPI) 8. SAFETY • Comply with Necsa's health and safety requirements • BBS observations and safety incidents. • Promote a Nuclear Safety Culture within NECSA group • Contribute to improvement or streamlined world class safety systems
