Job Title: Mechanical Fitter – Railway Maintenance Start Date: 2026-07-31 - 2026-08-30 Vacancy Type: Fixed Term Contract NCM003293 Sectors: Artisan Location: Gauteng , Johannesburg East Salary: (Market related, Negotiable) Brief: A well-established engineering and maintenance organisation is seeking a skilled Mechanical Fitter with hands-on railway maintenance experience to join its maintenance team. This position is ideal for a trade-tested artisan who is passionate about ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of rail equipment and rolling stock. Detail: Key Responsibilities Perform planned, preventative, and breakdown maintenance on railway rolling stock, locomotives, wagons, and rail-related mechanical equipment. Diagnose mechanical faults and carry out repairs to minimise equipment downtime. Strip, inspect, repair, and reassemble mechanical components, including gearboxes, couplings, bearings, pumps, compressors, and braking systems. Conduct routine inspections in accordance with maintenance schedules and rail safety standards. Replace worn or damaged components and ensure equipment is restored to operational condition. Read and interpret engineering drawings, technical manuals, and maintenance procedures. Maintain accurate maintenance records and complete job cards. Ensure compliance with safety, quality, and environmental standards. Participate in shutdowns, emergency repairs, and continuous improvement initiatives. Work closely with electricians, technicians, and maintenance planners to maximise equipment reliability. Minimum Requirements Trade Test Certificate as a Mechanical Fitter (Red Seal). N3 Mechanical Engineering or higher qualification. Minimum of 3–5 years' experience in railway or rolling stock maintenance. Proven experience maintaining locomotives, wagons, bogies, braking systems, or other rail mechanical equipment. Strong fault-finding and diagnostic skills. Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and technical documentation. Good understanding of preventative and predictive maintenance practices. Valid driver's licence.
